Beautiful Burke Lake Area Trails! An Easy and Newbie Friendly 7 Mile Sneaker Hike

Burke Lake Park is Located About 20 Miles Southwest of Washington in Fairfax County

Burke Lake Park consists of a 220-acre man-made lake enveloped by almost 700 acres of woodlands remarkably, much of the 40-year-old, county-managed park remains undeveloped and unvisited. Our main route primarily follows the lakeshore, so that hikers encounter few other people. This hike is a 1.35-mile jaunt from South Run park to the entrance of Burke Lake Park. The trail around Burke Lake is a 5.1-mile loop consisting of most of the lakeshore path followed by a brief detour, bringing our total mileage to 7 miles and some change. You’ll spend most of your trail time in the woods, surrounded by young oaks and other deciduous trees, as well as a scattering of conifers. In the warm-season months, expect to have wildflowers and birds for company (the island in the lake is a state waterfowl refuge). You may even see a deer or two on the path from South Run to Burke Lake. Hiking boots are not necessary for this hike as sneakers will do just fine.

I had forgotten how beautiful Burke lake park is. So glad I was reintroduced to this place! The distance could seem a bit challenging for newbies like myself but the trail was pretty flat throughout so it didn't feel too difficult. Toby also did awesome job of keeping our pace at where everyone felt comfortable. I had a well spent Saturday with wonderful group of people in beautiful nature!

Fun day for a hike around Burke Lake! Started out windy but was milder in the woods, saw ducks and geese, and the park was celebrating Winter Wonderland with the holiday train, tractor rides, carousel rides, and other activities off the trail. Thanks to Al for sweeping and to all for coming, good company for a good hike! I've posted my pics and enjoying yours. See you again next time!
