Beetree Preserve Hike Through Woods, Rolling Countryside & NCR! A Moderate 4 Mi

  • Join MAHG for a Hike Through the Woods and Rolling Countryside of the Very Biodiverse Beetree Preserve with a Section of the NCR Trail! A Moderate 4 Miles

This hike’s main attraction is the varied experiences that it packs into a four-mile hike —the NCR trail, the babbling of Beetree Run, a passage above a scenic stream hollow, and beautiful forestland!

Named for Beetree Run, a trout stream that meanders through the property, Beetree Preserve’s natural beauty and resources have welcomed hikers and inhabitants — both animal and human — for hundreds of years. Beetree Preserve is a tremendous natural resource and diverse habitat with grassy fields, wooded hillsides, mature forests, new growth woodlands, and valuable wetland areas. You will find many examples of indigenous wildlife species and native vegetation.

Our hike plan makes good use of this biodiverse area by combining views of the open rural countryside with a trek through the woods. It also offers one of the few circuit hikes along the Northern Central Railroad Trail (NCR). Following our jaunt along the wide flat path of the famous NCR trail through the rolling countryside, we duck into the woods for a ramble around a hilltop nature preserve.

Special Considerations: Please note that Beetree Preserve is privately owned and calling in advance of hiking here is required. For this reason, Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group does not offer this venue very frequently — usually limiting our treks to this hidden gem to once during the spring and fall, However, any time of year is well worth taking the time to make special arrangements to enjoy this very diverse and special area.

Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group (MAHG) values fellowship, camaraderie and practicing good hike etiquette and Leave No Trace principles. As a member-focused and mission-driven charitable organization, our hikes are led by generous, dedicated, and qualified MAHG members who volunteer as hike leaders for MAHG's leadership team. Hikes also have a volunteer “sweeper”, to help ensure that no hiker is left behind. Our volunteers and members are very supportive, encouraging, and always focus on safety, all while enjoying excellent camaraderie, the many health benefits of hiking, and unplugging from the stress of day to day life. Sharing what we know and learning from each other is an important part of our core values, as is our dedication to the conservation of our natural resources and our commitment to Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group’s mission. All MAHG events serve as micro-fundraisers to help support our mission.
