  • Gunpowder Falls State Park:  Featuring Spectacular Gunpowder River Views  -- Pleasantville!  A Moderate 5 Mile Hike with Optional Post Hike Meal

Seasonal Note: There is a beach with a swimming hole right near the end of the hike (see photo near the bottom of this page)! After a hike on a hot day let's cool off with a dip in the Little Gunpowder River. Bring a bathing suit, towel, beach chair or beach blanket, and a picnic lunch and let's relax after the hike and continue the camaraderie and good times from the trail!

Hike along the Gunpowder River, then ascend to the exceedingly beautiful rail bed of the defunct Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad. This hike winds up being one of the prettiest anywhere around and I was amazed that hiking in the Baltimore area could rival some I have driven much further when looking for similar beauty. Little Gunpowder Creek is the star of this hike. If you're into geopolitical boundaries the entire length of the Little Gunpowder Creek is the border between Baltimore and Harford Counties. So when you're done hiking in one county you cross over and go hiking in the other. There are bridge foundations that still stand over the Little Gunpowder Creek where trains crossed over the river way back in days now long gone. The parts of the loop that follow the old railroad bed have a spectacular view of the area where the land was raised to for the railroad as well as where parts of the hills were carved out. Come out and see just what a hidden gem of a hike this is for yourself!

    Transition Hike

This is a great hike for those looking to build stronger hiking legs because while it is still on the shorter side at just about 5 miles, it is pretty hilly. While there is nothing too steep or too long, they are all throughout the length of this beautiful hike. The rolling hills are what makes this a moderate and not an easy hike.
