Loch Raven Reservoir — Featuring the Northwest Area Trails! An Easy 4 Mile Hike
Let's enjoy a hike through the beautiful and secluded area of Loch Raven Reservoir. Bonus: In season, this hike plan boasts a most inviting swimmin' hole conveniently located near the end of the hike (Note: the swimmin' hole is NOT a part of or associated with the reservoir as the reservoir is used for municipal water and not to be used for swimming). So, in the warmer months, this is a most welcome area for cooling off, unless, by chance, you are one of our several members who enjoy taking the plunge into the very cold water during the colder months -- and if so, just be sure to capture that moment on film-grin.
A relatively unvisited—and most beautiful—section of Loch Raven Reservoir, making its best impression of Gunpowder Falls State Park’s Wildlands area. Broad and prominent trails parallel each other along the hills. This hike stays relatively level while keeping the reservoir a few hundred feet to the right below.
Loch Raven Reservoir is one of the most pristine outdoor locations in the metropolitan area, with resplendent plants and wildlife and beautiful water vistas, where visitors can enjoy miles of hiking trails that wind their way along the banks of the reservoir. Hikers can expect to see a wide variety of birds, including ravens, cardinals, blue jays, woodpeckers, and even bald eagles, as well as a lush and varied array of plants and trees, including oaks, beeches, maples, poplars, raspberries, and wild roses.

Hikes also have a volunteer “sweeper” to help ensure that no hiker is left behind. MAHG volunteers and members are very supportive, encouraging, with a focus on safety while enjoying the excellent camaraderie and benefiting from the many health benefits of hiking and unplugging from the stress of day-to-day life.
