A Hidden Gem Hike: Meadowood! An Easy-Side-of-Moderate 7 Miles!
This hidden gem offers a unique opportunity for us to explore the rich history, environmental, and recreational opportunities on Mason Neck. This area has rare undeveloped and protected lands compared to other regions in Fairfax County and Northern Virginia.
Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area contains a variety of terrains and vegetation types. These include gently sloping open meadows, mature hardwood forests along steep slopes and floodplains, and riparian areas, freshwater ponds, and streams. Located on Mason Neck peninsula in Fairfax County, Virginia. Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area offers 13 miles of hiking trails including a universally accessible trail to Hidden Pond, two fishing ponds, 800 acres of forest and meadows, environmental education programs, geocaching, picnicking and bird watching.
The 9,000 acre Mason Neck peninsula is located along the Potomac River about 18 miles south of Washington, D.C. Two-thirds of the peninsula is protected and managed by Federal, State, and Local Agencies.
Cooperative management of this rural area provides 500 total acres for recreation while still protecting natural resources. Habitat is provided for migratory and resident waterfowl, bald eagle nesting, feeding and roosting, and enhancement of species diversity for a variety of wildlife, including blue heron, wood ducks, screech owls, bluebirds, and tree frog, so there is a high chance that we will see a bird or two!
Also, interesting to note, are that plans are to manage it to provide open space for recreation, environmental education, and wild horse and burro interpretation.

Our hikes are led by generous, dedicated, and qualified MAHG members who volunteer as leaders for Mid-Atlantic Hiking Groups volunteer leadership team. Hikes also have a volunteer “sweeper” to help ensure that no hiker is left behind. MAHG volunteers and members are very supportive, encouraging, with a focus on safety while enjoying the excellent camaraderie and benefiting from the many health benefits of hiking and unplugging from the stress of day-to-day life.
