Presidents' Day at Arlington National Cemetery and Theodore Roosevelt Island National Memorial! An Easy-Side-of-Moderate 8 Miles (Metro Accessible)

"The grounds of Arlington National Cemetery honor those who have served our nation by providing a sense of beauty and peace for our guests. The rolling green hills are dotted with trees that are hundreds of years in age and complement the gardens found throughout the 624 acres of the cemetery. This impressive landscape serves as a tribute to the service and sacrifice of every individual laid to rest within the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery."

Arlington National Cemetery originally was a memorial to George Washington, developed by his adopted son, George Washington Parke Custis. It was seized by the United States government during the Civil War because it was owned by General Robert E. Lee and his wife, who abandoned it when the war began.

In addition to Arlington, we will visit the Theodore Roosevelt Island National Memorial. Initially, neglected, overgrown farmland, the island was transformed in the 1930s by landscape architects into a memorial to America's 26th president. The architects "conceived a 'real forest' designed to mimic the natural forest that once covered the island. Today miles of trails through wooded uplands and swampy bottomlands honor the legacy of a great outdoorsman and conservationist.”
