What we're about

Mid-Island Writers is a small, committed group for writers of any genre of fiction (short stories, novels, poetry, etc.) or nonfiction (essays, social commentary, memoir, blogging, etc.). Together, we explore how to improve our writing skills, critique each other's work in a constructive, supportive manner, and have some fun along the way! Whether you're an experienced writer looking to polish your latest work or a beginner just finding your voice, you're welcome to join us in our journey to be the best writers we can be. We look forward to meeting you!

Session Guidelines

If you'd like to share a brief selection of your work (1000 words max) during one of our sessions, please bring at least half a dozen hard copies so the other attendees can make notes in the text (you can print them double-sided if you wish).

Our usual process is that the author reads their selection to the group. If you're not comfortable reading your work aloud, one of the other attendees would be happy to do so on your behalf.

Alternately, if you'd prefer to just "audit" a session by listening to the other writers' selections and joining the discussions, that's totally fine as well.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I look forward to meeting you!

Membership Guidelines

Please note that MIW is capped at 50 members. If you are eager to actively participate in the group, I'm happy to have you join. If not, I must respectfully request that you allow those who want to be involved the opportunity to do so. I do clear the membership list of inactive participants periodically, but the group nevertheless quickly fills up. Therefore, if your profile is blank, I may remove you sooner than someone who has more detail. I don't expect you to reveal your life story on Meetup.com and I totally understand that some people are uncomfortable posting a photo of themselves, but as far as 'keep or cut' criteria, I'd like to know that there's a real person behind the profile. Thanks for understanding.

If you have any questions about membership criteria (or anything else pertaining to MIW, please feel free to contact me.

Write-In Session - 1/20/19

Panera Bread

Write-In Sessions are an opportunity to engage in some writerly camaraderie and get some actual writing done. We discuss writing-related issues and challenges and may even do a writing prompt but Write-In's are less structured than our standard critique sessions at Brentwood Library. Regardless, I'm confident you'll find the session to be fun, relaxing, informative, and productive! Note that you do not need to stay for the entire session. You can come at any time and leave at any time. I hope to see you there!

"The world is a hellish place..."

Brentwood Public Library

This session's quote is from one of my favorite singer/songwriters, the incomparable Tom Waits. ______________________________________________________ If you would like to share a selection of your writing with the group (1000 words max), please bring enough hard copies for all attendees so we can provide you with some notes. Formatting: 12 pt font with double-spacing, half-inch margins. You can print on both sides of the page to save a few trees. Just be sure they're numbered. Remember to put your name and the title at the top! If you just wish to 'audit' the session to get a feel for the group, that's totally fine as well.
