Let's do a scouting hike weekend at Cumberland Falls State Resort in KY. (near Corbin KY)
This will be a scouting trip as I have never hiked the trails but have researched them.
On Saturday we will meet Ranger Steve Gilbert in the lobby of the Dupont lodge at 12:30pm Central time (1:30pm Eastern) he will take us on a tour of the Pinnacle Knob Fire Tower. The only way we can go to the top of the fire tower is by doing a tour. We are not allowed to just climb up the tower like we can in some other places.
The tour and picture taking should take around 1 hour at most. We will then do around a 5 mile hike back to the parking lot.
This should put us a the lot at the right time to see the moonbow at the falls. We will be on the first night of the moonbow so we will want to be there right at dusk.
The next morning we will do a shuttle hike that will be 10.8 miles strenuous that will run along side the Cumberland river where we will be able to see some of the rapids as well as rock houses.
You can stay overnight at the lodge or a cabin. I will be staying at one of the Woodland Cabins.
Here is a link to the Park Website you can see the dates for the moonbow as well as book a room at a cabin or the Dupont Lodge
Here is a link to the map of the park (note we on Saturday we will hike back from the Fire Tower on Trail number 11 to number 7 to number 12) On Sunday the hike will be Trail number 1 from The mouth of Laurel Lake to The visitor Center parking lot
Link about the trail on Sunday
We will carpool from Home Depot 955 South Hartman Dr Lebanon TN at 8AM Central Time.
What to bring:
WATER lunch and snacks. Also I recommend hiking poles hiking boots. We should be back well before dark but bring a Headlight just in case it gets dark before we make it back.
