The[masked] Williamsburg Pool Sessions are back! These sessions are a great opportunity to practice our kayaking skills in a warm, safe environment -- the average water temperature of the R.F. Wilkinson Family Y's pool is 84º ! It's the perfect place to practice or learn those self and assisted rescue skills, bracing, rolling, wet exits, etc. There will be an ACA-certified instructor at most sessions to provide tips or assistance where needed/wanted. Please do note that these pool sessions are not lessons ... they are practice sessions. For those desiring formal lessons, please see below.
So, new paddlers, old paddlers, seasoned paddlers, unseasoned paddlers (ahem), and those just curious about kayaking, sign up now and often to reserve your spot. All sessions are held on Sunday afternoons from 2:00 pm -- 5:00 PM. Here are the dates:
November 20th & 27th
December 11th & 18th
January 15th & 29th
February 12th & 26th
March 12th & 26th
April 9th & 23rd
This year our available pool space has increased, so we will be able to accommodate up to 8 kayaks in the water at a time. The cost remains the same for individual pool sessions at $20/session (thank you, R.F. Wilkinson Y!). Also this year, discounts are available for those who sign up for four consecutive sessions at a time -- details below. These fees barely cover the pool rental, insurance, and other associated costs; no one makes a profit. This year's pool sessions are sponsored by the R.F. Wilkinson Family Y and the Chesapeake Bay Paddling Company.
How it works: Kayakers' entrance to the pool is on the front far left side of the building. Before entering the pool area, all kayaks and associated gear -- paddles, rescue equipment, PFD's, etc. must be scrupulously clean. There will be a gear washing station setup just outside the entrance. All participants are expected to clean their equipment thoroughly before entering the pool area. All road grime, mud, slime, sticks, leaves, acorns, food wrappers, etc. MUST be removed. After cleaning gear and getting it inside, there will be a sign-in sheet and two waiver forms from our sponsors to read and sign. After signing in, participants must shower fully suited up in their paddling clothing AND PFD. There is easy access to the men's and women's showers from the main pool area. After cleaning kayaks and gear, signing in , and showering, it's time to get in the pool!
Payment Policy: Payment is required at the time of your reservation and is made via credit/debit card through this Meetup site via WePay. This is a safe and easy way to reserve your pool session. Checks or cash are not accepted.
Discount: Participants who sign up for four (4) CONSECUTIVE sessions at a time will receive a $5.00 discount per session. So signing up for four sessions IN A ROW will cost $60.00 instead of $80.00. Or, put another way, sign up for four sessions and get the fourth one free! This discount will be applied as a refund to your credit/debit card after signing up and paying the full price for the consecutive sessions you have reserved.
Refunds: Due to the "first come, first served" nature of these sessions, refunds will be given ONLY in the case of a pool session being canceled by one of our sponsors. Generally, this would be caused by pool closure due to inclement weather. Refunds CAN NOT be given for any other reason, so be sure of your schedule and other commitments before signing up and paying for sessions. If you have signed up and payed for a session that you are unable to attend, you are encouraged to contact other paddlers on the wait list for that session and work out an exchange between yourselves. This seemed to work well last year, so we'll keep that going this year, too.
The primary purpose of these pool sessions is to provide a resource for kayakers in the Middle Peninsula, Hampton Roads, and Richmond areas to practice and increase their paddling skills in a warm, safe, and supportive environment. It is made possible by volunteers -- no one is paid or makes a profit from the pool sessions fees. However, based on last season's demand, private and group kayaking lessons -- rolling, bracing, rescues, etc. -- are available on a limited basis at these pool sessions. Contact Jim Warwick at Chesapeake Bay Paddling Company, (804)[masked] for more information.
Pool sessions are also posted on the Hampton Raods Kayakers Meetup website. If you are a member of both groups, please sign up through either Meetup -- Hampton Roads Kayaking OR Middle Peninsula Paddlers, but NOT both. Thanks!
Refunds are not offered for this Meetup.
