Snake River National Recreation Trail Backpack

  • We did this trip in spring 2016 and was so much fun will do it again, but extend the trip to include the complete Snake River National Recreation Trail.

The trip begins by traveling down the Snake River from Hells Canyon Dam to Lamont Springs (about 1.5 miles) via jetboat, then backpack down the Snake River for 30-35 miles to Kirkwood Ranch, and jet boat back to vehicles at Hells Canyon Dam.

Day one: Begin at Lamont Springs and hike about 9 miles to Granite Creek. This is the most difficult portion of the hike and will require some off trail, some bush whacking, crossing talus/scree slopes, and two creek crossings. We will experience ticks, poison ivy is present, and rattlesnakes are in the area. Last year while in the area I was lucky enough to see a bear.  We will camp near Granite Creek if we make it that far.

Day 2: Backpack Granite Cr. to Sheep Cr., about 11 miles, assuming we made it to Granite Cr. the day before, otherwise the mileage may be greater. The good news is that the route from Granite Creek to Sheep Cr. is an actual trail! There are no tricky creek crossings but ticks, poison ivy, and rattlesnakes could still be present. The camp at Sheep Cr. is outstanding.

Day 3: Backpack from Sheep Creek to Kirkwood Ranch. Once again, trail! But the same old ticks (which by now will be ho-hum), potential rattlesnakes (which are never ho-hum!), and the ever-present poison ivy. Much river history in this section.

Here is a link describing one groups trip and a gallery of pictures:

The jet boat cost has not yet been determined, but last year cost $130.00. I will initially pay the cost in full for 12 persons, and will require a non-refundable payment from you to confirm the trip five weeks before the trip. I will post this a "one" with an unlimited "waitlist", but there will be room for 12 hikers only. The waitlist is the order the hikers will be accepted once the RSVP's are opened.

Also note, some of the details may change because of the distant date and the need to confirm travel times via jetboat with Hells Canyon Adventures.

If you have questions, please message me.  Here is a link to the outfitter:
