The Round House by Louise Erdrich

National Book Award Winner 2012.

Each new Erdrich novel adds new layers of pathos and comedy, earthiness and spiritual questing, to her priceless multigenerational drama. This is one of her best -- concentrated, suspenseful, and morally profound. Filled with stunning language that recalls shades of Faulkner, Garcia Marquez and Toni Morrison, Louise Erdrich embraces tragedy, the comic, a spirit world very much present in the lives of her all-too-human characters, and a tale of injustice that is, unfortunately, an authentic reflection of what happens in our own world today.

Hey Scott, sorry you can't make it... I'll try to report back on what we talk about!

    Hi all --

Unfortunately, I'll be out of town next week. So I won't be able to attend Wednesday. But I'm reading the book anyway. I'm about 100 pages or so in, and, so far at least, it's well written and pretty thought provoking. Another solid pick.

Hey Louise -- thanks for letting me know! I know Thursday was bad for someone... Wed. was out for someone else, so I may try Tuesday or Sunday. I think I'll put up a poll to see what nights are "out" so we can schedule better...

Thanks for sharing, Jonathan. It's baffling that things this awful can be happening in our country without anyone getting punished. Definitely know more than I used to...

Just finished the book and the most astounding/disheartening part of it is the current reality of rape on reservations. Here's an op-ed Erdrich wrote about it a few days ago: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/27/opinion/native-americans-and-the-violence-against-women-act.html

Welcome Jason! :) Just bring yourself, no need to prepare. I'll come with some discussion questions and we always have plenty to talk about!

Hello everyone. I just joined the group and am excited to read / discuss The Round House. I have never been in a book club. Aside from the obvious (reading the book, showing up for meeting) is there anything I should do to be fully prepared? :)
