What we're about

We uphold the idea that self-improvement and community-building are two sides of the same goal: one cannot be attained without the other. Unfortunately, the modern approach to self-improvement --- from life-coaching at extravagant mindfulness studios to expensive university certificates and workshops --- targets the fear-of-missing-out (FOMA) that most of us experience these days. This self-centered path to a better version of ourselves is isolating us from one another, seeing others as competitors we have to measure ourselves against.

Let us cultivate the mind, body, and spirit with lectures, meditation, discussion groups, authentic conversation, and other meaningful activities, while building an inclusive community together. Our mission is to invite everyone into community, to continually learn & grow, to abolish poverty & end needless suffering, to pursue peace & justice, and to live life meaningfully together.

Our Sunday activities are grounded in a tradition of progressive Christianity that is free from dogma and judgement. All are welcome regardless of background and beliefs. We are an inclusive, LGBTQ affirming community.

LGBTQ+ Non-Dogmatic Church

Centre Place

A non-dogmatic and non-judgemental church service open to interfaith and skeptical perspectives. We reject literal interpretations of scripture and approach the Bible in context: authors, audiences, purposes, and goals, hoping to find new insight and value. We welcome all ages, gender identities, gender expressions, religious backgrounds, religious affiliations, spiritual types, political leanings, educational levels, financial capacities, and physical abilities. Our mission is to invite everyone into community, to continually learn & grow, to abolish poverty & end needless suffering, to pursue peace everywhere, and to live life meaningfully together. We live this mission through a variety of community building and spiritual formation activities including Sunday services; history, philosophy and theology lectures; mindfulness meditation; lectio divina; retreats; and special events. All our events are live streamed and our friends from around the world regularly participate, extending this community beyond our walls. We've been meeting in Downtown Toronto since 1891. Our congregation is affiliated with Community of Christ, a world-wide LGBTQ+ affirming, non-creedal progressive Christian tradition that extends all levels of priesthood to women, men, and LGBTQ+ individuals, and celebrates same-sex marriage.

Illumination Class: Scripture and Theology

Centre Place

Join us each Sunday for Illumination. This class will explore the ancient texts of the Hebrew Bible and early Christian communities in light of their historical context. Our goal is to understand the text's meaning by learning about the authors, their audiences, their purposes and goals. We will then discern what value (if any) these ancient ideas have for our own day. By avoiding modern, literalist, and presentist readings of scripture, we hope to allow the text to breath and offer us new insights and value in our own spiritual practices. All are welcome. LGBTQ+ affirming. Jewish and Christ tradition, but open to interfaith and skeptical perspectives.

Logos Meditation: Lectio Divina, Mindfulness, Centering Prayer

Join us for a moment of relaxation as we open mind, body, and soul to the word and let the spirit transform our lives one breath at a time. Logos Meditation is a meditative service that combines the contemplation of sacred text (Lectio Divina,) with mindfulness, centering prayer, and chanting. This meditative practice aims to explore the Bible and other spiritual text of the Western tradition by immersing the whole mind, body, and spirit in the word, as opposed to the exclusively intellectual approach of exegesis. We also find common ground between the mystic traditions of Christianity and Buddhism, and the modern academic perspectives in order to deepen our practice. All are welcome. LGBTQ+ affirming. Interfaith.
