Mindful Astoria: Weekly Summer Meditation Gathering

Mindful Astoria: Weekly Summer Meditation Gathering

Join us on Wednesday nights this summer for meditation and conversation about mindfulness. Learn how to bring mindfulness into daily life, and how to establish, maintain, and deepen a personal mindfulness practice.

Each class will consist of instruction in different forms of mindfulness meditation, and time for group discussion and connecting with the community. Depending on the week, the teacher may give a talk or share a reading about a related topic such as working with distractions, mindful communication, compassion, working with emotions, bringing mindfulness to anxiety, home practice tips, mindfulness and social action, and more.

Teacher for this week's class: Emily Herzlin

Emily Herzlin (also the MeetUp group organizer) is a writer, editor, and teacher. She has taught creative writing and mindfulness meditation at Columbia University, The Interdependence Project, Adelphi University, GreenspaceNYC, and Mission to (dit)Mars. Emily has been practicing mindfulness meditation for ten years, and trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) through the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School. She is also a graduate of the Yearlong Immersion and Teacher Training program at the Interdependence Project, where she currently teaches MBSR and a monthly contemplative writing workshop.

Emily, you mentioned that you have a 13-minute recorded body scan guided meditation on your SoundCloud account? Can you link to it?

    Thanks!

Last night's class was my first experience with body scanning and the sutta. Great discussion, guided practice, and location.

The meditation technique I mentioned is called Vipassana. There are centers all over the world where you can take a free 10-day course. If it appeals to you, I highly recommend it.

Hi all. Just a quick note about the church location. It can be a little bit tricky to find if you haven't been there before. It is located at 23-35 Broadway, between Crescent St. and 23rd St. (I think the map says it is on 30th st, but that is not correct.) It is on the north side of Broadway, just past Trade Fair and Synergy Fitness. There is an awning over the front door. The church shares the space with Art House Astoria, so if you see the Art House sign, you are in the right place!

Please note the slight change: Guest teacher Marisa Viola will be joining us next week, June 18th, instead of this week.
