What we're about

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: We are moving to a free online format until in-person meetups are feasible once again. Invite links/passwords are provided when you RSVP and sent your email address to the organizers.

We are using Zoom, which is available as a phone or tablet app, but we strongly recommend using a laptop computer with camera so that your screen is large enough. Attendance is limited to 9 people in the online format.

We're going to get together online for a couple of hours to explore the connection between improv and mindfulness by playing improv games and doing improv exercises connected to being in the Now, giving up our egos, and developing the confidence to just jump in!

You don't need any experience in improv or any mindfulness practices. You just need to be curious!

Please note that attendance is restricted to the people who RSVP'ed for the meetup. If you RSVP "yes," you have committed to attending the meetup. If you find that you cannot attend the meetup, please change your RSVP to "not attending" so that people on the wait list will be able to attend.

We will resume our initial 10 minutes of meditation when we return to our in-person meetups, but for the online format, we encourage you to sit before the session starts.

This group explores the relationship between mindfulness and improvisational theater (“Improv”). Improv involves challenging your comfort zone, being in the now, relinquishing your ego, and developing the confidence to just jump in. As such, it involves us in the experience of the Now, much like our experience of other mindfulness practices.

We will be playing improv games, performing scenes, and doing other exercises that explore the experience of being confidently in the Now, while also learning to extend that experience into being able to play well with others -- even when not improvising. We emphasize long-form improv -- doing scenes that are made-up on the spot -- over short-form (think "Middleditch and Schwartz," or "TJ and Dave," not "Whose Line is it Anyway?"). It's like making up comedy sketches on the spot -- while not having to be funny -- you'll see how it works!

We especially encourage those interested in mindfulness who are a bit shy, and who have no experience in either improv or theater. Come learn a fun and very useful extension to your current mindfulness or theater practice, and meet like-minded new friends! And it's a lot of fun!

If you are an experienced improviser, come try out a different way to approach your art. You might be surprised at how your skill set can be expanded.
