East St Paul (ESP) Speculative Fiction Writers Meetup

The topic for May will be "Writing action that speaks louder than words".  We'll explore how to craft the physical cues that show a character's emotions more  creatively and effectively than simply telling.  Bill Cutler will lead the discussion.

We will critique three submissions, first come--first served. The guidelines are:

• Items must be listed in Files under MORE! on the Homepage by May 6th. You need to be logged in on the Homepage to access Files.

• Submissions should be a maximum of 10,000 words and submitted in Word or RTF, but not .docx or PDF. If doing a continuation of an ongoing work, please do a synopsis, the word count to be included in the maximum.

• Please preface the submission with [ESP Crit 5-13] so we know it's for our group.

• Please add page numbers so those doing critiques on a separate sheet of paper have a reference point.

Guidelines for critiques:

• Locate submissions under [ESP Crit 5-6] in Files under MORE!

• Print out a copy and make your edits and comments on it. It's OK to change the format for your printout.

• OR, make your comments on a separate sheet of paper to give to the author.

• Keep oral critiques to three minutes or less.

See you in May!

Lindsey, Eric and Jen's stories were so intriguing that they drew the largest group of writers this group has ever seen. If you write it...they will come.

Good, Teft was challenging. I was trying to a balance the combination of a tiger and woman in the drawing. I wasn't sure if I pulled it off. I am glad you liked it.

This group seems to be just what I was looking for... a replacement for the creative writing community I had in college, minus the promise of student loan debt. :) I left the meeting feeling motivated, and look forward to future meetups!

My first in-person writer's group - it was HUGE! It was also awesome, and thanks to all those who kindly helped me out with my work. What a great first experience with a writer's group. I'll definitely be there each month.

I just posted a file. It's a chapter in the middle (not exact center, but you know, in the big middle portion) of a work, so there are quite a few notes to explain things that you would have known reading the rest of it first. I hope I was doing the right thing, the right way.

I just posted a VERY different version/rewrite of the first chapter of Flight for the May 13th meetup. I hope you guys enjoy it!

You may need to RSVP again as the system reposted last month's meeting notice. Sorry for the confusion!
