And if you don't write, tell us why you like hanging around with SF writers...

I'm Hilary Moon Murphy. I write really weird fantasy stories about asian folktales, the US patent office, lactation, and chicken boys. What about the rest of you?

Hmm

Edited to add... As we now have the power of stickies to pin discussions to the top, this is now being pinned to the top!

Hi folks, I'm Sherry L.M. Merriam. I write fantasy, and would love to be published some day. I'm having a hard time making the commitment that a writer needs to accomplish that, but if nothing else I enjoy being around other writers and fans of the genre. Perhaps getting more involved in the local writing community would help me find my drive and voice.

I'm Michael Merriam. I write Urban Fantasy and Magical Realism, usually using the Twin Cities as my back-drop. Occasionally I will write a secondary fantasy world story.

Hello, I'm Beth Hynes.
Most of the stories I've written are fantasy but I'm also interested in science fiction. One short story has been published, but a long time ago. I'm working on the proverbial novel and it has taken longer than I anticipated. I'm interested in discussing style, technique and how the heck do you make the time to write while juggling day-work and family!

Hi folks. My name is Jason D. Wittman, and I primarily write fantasy. My biggest sale to date is a novelette, "On Bookstores, Burners, and Origami," to SCIFI.COM. Recently, I have sold two short stories, "Agatha," and "A Game of Knight Court," to Dark Krypt and Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, respectively. My writing has taken a historical fantasy/alternate history bent recently (witness "Bookstores" above), but I have a persistent problem with characterization. My writing is idea-driven--I can't begin a story if I don't have the whole plot down in my head (I've made several attempts to write a story without a specific ending in mind, and they went absolutely nowhere). Perhaps these Meetups will help me in that regard.

Yay, it's good to see everyone here and introducing themselves! Welcome! Now... If each of you could invite one other person, we could really grow this group.

First off, Hilary, I can't believe you wrote the phrase, "grow this group." I'm horrified.

And on to introductions. I'm S.N.Arly. I live in the Twin Cities and primarily write fantasy with a bit of horror for good measure. My novels tend to be YA and the short stories tend to be adult. I'm particularly fond of retelling faerie tales.

I've sold a couple of short stories to pro markets which have since tanked. I will have a story in the upcoming issue of Tales of the Unanticipated (aka TOTU) in July/August.

Because I've got chronic diffuse tendinitis, I write with voice recognition software and edit with a floating split keyboard set up with Dvorak layout.

S.N. Arly -- Oh no! I have been caught in the act of writing badly! What can I say in my defense?

Everyone else -- Does anyone have any idea who dahutys is? Usernames are often based on e-mail addresses, and I have no idea with this one. Hmmm... Maybe my random advertising on various websites is working if people that I don't know are now signing up. Cool!

I'm Karen Swanberg (http://www.karenswanb..., and I write SF. I'm working on shorts (which invariably turn into novellas) and a novel. Oh, and in my day job I'm a computer geek, so I put in links instinctively. =)

I've met about 1/2 of the people who have already introduced themselves in other forums, be they virtual (http://www.speculatio... and http://sff.onlinewrit...) or real (http://www.sf3.org/wi....

I would also recommend Broad Universe (http://www.broadunive...) - an organization to support women in SpecFic, and FlyLady (http://www.flylady.ne...) - a way to stay sane while having a house, kids and career and still findind time to write.
