New Meetup: Exploring Jay Cooke, May 14-16

Announcing a new Meetup for The Minneapolis/St. Paul Backpackers Meetup Group!

What: Exploring Jay Cooke, May 14-16

When: Friday, May 14,[masked]:00 AM

Jay Cooke State Park
780 Highway 210
Carlton, MN 55718

Come out and camp with us at Jay Cooke State Park just south of Duluth on the St. Louis River. We will be camping at the Ash Ridge backpack-in campsite. It is about 2 miles or so in to the campsite. We will camp there on both Friday and Saturday nites. Any of you who have ever been to the park already know how scenic the river and it's rapids are even in the summertime, but the water will be high with spring runoff and the rapids should be spectacular. The rafters and kayakers should be going strong. Saturday will be spent hiking with or w/o packs on the trails to the NE of the campsite (6-8 miles) as well as hikes along the river.

The hiking plan can not be determined yet until the river level is known but we can assume that crossing it anywhere other than the swinging bridge will not be possible. Spring flowers should be out for all you photo bugs.
Everyone will be expected to be entirely self equipped for this trip. The milage will be low giving new backpackers the chance to try it out and get ready for the longer trips this year.
The trip is limited to 6 because of the campsite restrictions but if enough backpackers commit early enough we could possibly get more campsites. But this park fills up fast, so don't delay. The estimated cost is $5 to cover campsite costs. I am not allowing "maybe's" to sign up as this would fill up the numbers quick leaving out those who want to commit right away. When the list is full sign up on the waiting list for the possibility of another campsite. Email me with any questions or post them here.
