Newbie Night XIX - Thursday, July 28, 7:00 p.m., Java Train, St. Paul

For those who have just joined the Minnesota Atheists Meetup and for those who have not yet had a chance to meet their fellow nonbelievers, we are pleased to announce the nineteenth in our popular series of Newbie Meetups.

Newbie Nights are specifically designed for those who've never attended an MNA Meetup before or haven't had much opportunity to interact with other MNA Meetup members. It can be intimidating to be the only person in the room who doesn't know anybody else, so here's an event where EVERYONE has come to meet like-minded people they've never met before. Three small group discussions with conversation topics provided will give you a chance to meet lots of new, like-minded people. We've reserved one of the downstairs meeting rooms at the fabulous Java Train Café (The Southern Railway Room, to be precise) until 9:30 p.m. Street parking is available, but you may have to walk a block.

Java Train is located on a side street between the State Fairgrounds and Como Zoo. They don't charge us to reserve the space because we're a nonprofit organization, but ask us to reward their kindness by purchasing a beverage, snack, or meal. They have a full menu, featuring dinners, soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts (including many flavors of ice cream and one of their specialties, Chef Katie's Whoopie Pies). Check out their website for more information:

Past Newbie Nights have filled up fairly quickly, so don't delay your RSVP if you're fairly certain you can make it. We've reserved for 20 and ask that you keep your RSVP updated if your plans change so another Newbie can take your place!

An especially lively, fun and interesting group. Wish I had more time to talk to everyone, and hope to see them again. (Everyone can attend two Newbie Nights, by the way.)

I had a lot of fun at Newbie Night. Most of the people there were completely new to Minnesota Atheists, so it was interesting to hear the variety of stories people had about how they came to embrace atheism, and came to want community as an atheist. When we were split into groups, we were given a list of atheism-related questions that we shared our answers to, and discussed within the group. It was interesting to be challenged to think about some things that I just hadn't considered analyzing in the past, so it broadened my perspective. It was also interesting to find what others would come up with as answers. One example of an interesting question we answered, was related to spirituality and what spirituality means to each of us. Some of us automatically denied spirituality as something supernatural, but then a couple of us had a different take on it, and how thinking in certain ways can be psychologically beneficial, spiritually speaking.

Adrienne--Thursdays are popular, but we sometimes do these on other nights, usually Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Let me know if one of those works better and I'll try to accommodate you next time.

I would really like to attend but I work Thursday nights! In fact, I've noticed that many MNA events are on Thursdays, which is unfortunate.
