This group is about people that love the water and always had the desire to learn to sail. The group's primary goal is focused on having fun, enjoying the outdoors and meeting new people that enjoy similar things.
Bottom line is I am part of a competitive racing club that needs to grow their sailing advocates. Personally, I am looking to find new people to crew on my boat on a regular and semi-regular basis. Other captains have the same problem of keeping a full crew with substitutes. People have busy summer schedules and can't commit to a full time event. So, I am trying to help mentor people into our sport in a part time basis that could bring a fun, adventure, fitness and more socially active life.
We have races on Thursdays and Sundays starting in May and go until September. I need to have my main crew set by May for Thursday races with a 5:15-8 pm time commitment. I'd like to get a sub list for that as well. Sunday races will have a 1-4 pm commitment that will vary a bit in frequency and in June and July be regular. Saturdays will be much more relaxed and focused on seeing what it's like and learning. I am by no means an "expert" but have things to share.
You don't have to be in tip top physical shape but the sport is demanding depending on the winds. You need to be comfortable on the water (life jackets are provided) and easily move around in the boat. You also need to have an aptitude and desire to learn. I learn something every race. You should be willing to be a part of a team which means that you show up when you say you will. And most importantly, have a bit of a pirate to socialize after our time on the water to bask in the after glow with the rest of the group.
