Firebase: A Story of Migrating a Mobile App from Parse to Firebase

Sponsor: Dominos is sponsoring food and drinks at the event!

Speaker: Don Miller

Abstract: In January 2016, most of the users around the world were shocked to hear that their highly supported Facebook owned data housing platform will be no longer in 2017.  In this talk we will discuss the process of finding a migration path from to a new platform.  We will discuss the pros and cons of some competing products, building your own custom API, or using the open source version of Parse.  We discuss how we settled on Firebase and the advantages of standardizing on this platform.  The remainder of the discussion, I will show some technical aspects of migrating our app from Parse to Firebase.  This will be a high level talk, but there will be some code samples comparing the SDK’s.

Don Miller is the Principal Consultant of GroundSpeed™.  He has over 20 years of professional experience in addition to the sale of his first program (spaghetti code) at the age of 14.  His broad range of experience makes him very relatable to programmers and system engineers.  He is a crazed social networker within the nerd community, one of the founding partners of Seed Coworking in Toledo.  Don has mastered getting people started on iOS development by curating/teaching classes in the local university, onsite training, and instructing at local, regional, and national conferences.

Thanks everyone for being so welcoming. Sorry I had to duck out during the end of the conversation. I live in Lansing and my wife wasn't feeling well. I did have a question if anybody has an opinion I was just getting ready to learn forbade so I could use it in place of realm, and then this week realm announced their mobile sync platform which I would have to host on my own, but they do make that somewhat painless by offering an AWS AMI... does anybody have an opinion on one over the other? The one advantage I can see for realm is that it is not a JSON file... thoughts?

Good meeting tonight. I ran across this anti-Firebase article as I dug deeper. I don't know if it is true but always good to have multiple perspectives.
