Since then, digital rights management (DRM) technologies have begun to appear everywhere, from automobiles to home goods to medical devices. Today, modifying the software on your slow cooker might be illegal. The law gives manufacturers ammunition to fight people using their products in ways they don't approve of. That's wrought havoc on software hackers as well as unauthorized resellers and repair shops. At this event, we'll talk about how DRM has impacted the hacker and tinkerer community, and how the community can fight back. This event is free and open to the public. ____________________ About the Speaker Elliot Harmon | ACTIVISM DIRECTOR @ EFF Elliot is the activism director at EFF. Today, EFF uses the unique expertise of leading technologists, activists, and attorneys in our efforts to defend free speech online, fight illegal surveillance, advocate for users and innovators, and support freedom-enhancing technologies. Together, we forged a vast network of concerned members and partner organizations spanning the globe. EFF advises policymakers and educates the press and the public through comprehensive analysis, educational guides, activist workshops, and more. EFF empowers hundreds of thousands of individuals through our Action Center and has become a leading voice in online rights debates.
