I have exchanged tweets with one of the MCPS coaches who was going to get me some contacts. Have not heard back yet.

Good brainstorming; nice to see who is interested. Looking forward to a little more structure with the program and forming clear expectations. This could be big! :)

Great conversations with some very community minded, pay it forward passionate geeks. Thanks Josh, Pat, Bob, Doug and Nora. Let's make these ideas work.

I started a Robotics club for HellGate Elementary and middle school 4th-7th graders, but I had to get the Principal, and a teacher to sign up and then take it to the school board and convince them. But it turned into the HellGate Robotics club. :-)

Maybe the best solution for the younger kids is to train the teachers. Teachers have to do a certain amount of PIR. It may be possible to offer the districts some training. Programming logic can be turned into some pretty fun games. Just the game of telephone is a good example of what happens to your data in an integration project :-)

FYI for everyone, we chose to go after high schools first due to all the legal issues with a program outside the school having direct 1:1 contact with students agest 13 and under outside of the context of school due to COPPA regulations. I'm a huge fan of doing these types of activities starting in 1st grade, in that case it is probably best to either do them in the school or get some legal representation to ensure that you don't end up with issues. There are a number of great resources available besides the one we are using, there'a a good list here:

We have relationships with MCPS, Hellgate Elementary School District, EAST, and FLAGSHIP. If there is enough interest in Middle and Elementary school programming we can reach out to these entities to prevent any liability. We are just waiting on having enough mentors prior to reaching out.

Joshua...is this purely about CodeMontana or will we talk about items for kids younger than high school?

I am open to a conversation about anything in education and technology. I have been meeting with schools to work on mobile use in classroom and I am also working with the computer science club at UM attempting to get projects together for elementary and middle school. We taught HTML to Lewis & Clark 4,5 graders in EAST program a year or so ago.

Let's have a great discussion of CodeMontana and technology education and usage for all kids.

Is this FOR kids or ABOUT kids coding ?

Cool. I'm not a programmer but I can help connect your program to area moms. Let me know if you are at this point or if I should wait to jump in until later.

It can't hurt. We will also be looking for kids to join the program. They are more than welcome to come

Hi Josh-I'd love to come to this first meeting, but I'll be in Bozeman for the Montana Science and Engineering Festival. I'll catch up with you later! Can't wait to hear more about it after Monday.

Mobile Minds LLC is happy to host this meeting at MonTEC. Are there any recommendations for dates or for a preferred day of the week? I am hoping to have this meeting in the first week of September to prepare for program launch.

Thanks for hosting. I would have a tendency to wait a few weeks into September since many of us with kids have full schedules for the kickoff of fall and then the dust settles. Just a thought so increase attendance but certainly throw something out there and see what sticks

How about a link to an agenda (even for brainstorming)? Maybe via https://draftin.com/features
