Missoula Meetup — Intro to Object-Oriented PHP

Getting into OOP with Jason Lengstorf. We'll go over the basics of Object-Oriented Programming and touch on the following:

  • What objects and classes mean to you as a programmer

  • Why you should bother learning OOP

  • How to create objects

  • How to add properties to your class

  • How to add methods to your class

  • What "magic methods" are, and how they can help you

  • Other tips and tricks to help you make the most of OOP

This session will be geared toward developers with experience levels ranging from "I know how to make a function!" to "I invented PHP." We'll make it work. If you have specific OOP-related requests for the session, please send them to Jason at [masked]

Excellent presentation from Jason Lengstorf. We're very lucky to have designers and developers with such skills in Missoula. Jason will be moving to Portland shortly and he will absolutely be missed in our community! Thanks for all the great training and leadership you have shared with the group Jason!

Thanks for all your work putting this together! Ian it was great to meet your daughter, and congratulations on your new job. Jason, thanks for the presentation. It was a good reminder of things I learned in CS related to other programming languages. It really made me wonder about the internal workings of memory etc, when classes are extended. IMHO, it is good to have an idea of the computer processes that we don't see.

I'll take it pretty slow, so let's say somewhere between beginner and intermediate?

Welcome back Jason! This sounds like a topic I'm interested in. I'm wondering what PHP skill level one should be at to get the most out of this meetup? Thanks for the info.

I bet. Traveling can be fun, but it can really wear on you!

Yeah, just last night. It was a great trip, but it was SO nice to sleep in my own bed again. :)

That's something I'd be interested in hearing. You back in town, Jason?

Do we have a topic for this meetup? Before I left, we'd talked about an intro to OOP in PHP — is that still something people would be interested in?
