NoSQL

I've recently gotten really interested in NoSQL databases, such as MongoDB. I'd love to talk to others who use it or are thinking of making the switch too.

great for folks with little experience and folks who've gotten their feet wet.

Great meetup last night, very informative. Glad to meet everyone. Would anyone be interested in starting a regular Missoula meetup? I heard of the Bozeman monthly Drink Ups and would love to have something similar monthly, bi-weekly or even weekly in Missoula!

Great information, good beer, tasty pizza. Can't beat that for a Thursday evening.

I had no experience of NoSQL databases, but left with a solid feel for the uses and limitations of them, particularly Mongo. Thanks for the work Jonathon and Lance. I appreciated it.

Thanks everyone! It was great to meet all of you. Slides from my presentation available at: http://chilkari.github.com/mongodb-slides (based on reveal.js. Arrows for nav -- don't forget to use the down arrow when available! ESC gives an overview)

Sorry I can't make this! I'm laid out with a foot injury right now.

This should be a good time tomorrow. I'll do a basic intro to NoSQL in general, and Jonathan Wilson will be talking about MongoDB. We'll have pizza and beer.

There are advanced Drupal implementations that are using Couch and Mongo, so I'm def interested. I've heard there are some uses where a NoSQL db is faster & scales better than MySQL but it varies. See e.g. http://bit.ly/Psvcp8

I have The Loft reserved for the evening of Thursday, July 12th. How does that date work? I'd love to hear about your experience with MongoDB, Jonathon.

    May 30, 2012

  • Dan B.

@Lance & @Jonathon, does the second week in July work then?

    May 30, 2012

  • Jonathon W.

I've been slow to respond here -- mostly because I've been working on a big MongoDB project that's been taking all of my time. We've effectively found the upper limit of a single MongoDB instance, which could be informational in itself! I'm still interested in helping to talk about this if people are interested. However, I'm just about to move into my new house, so I need a few weeks before my wife will let me out of the house :)

    May 25, 2012

  • Lance F.

I can reserve space at The Loft for this.

    May 25, 2012

  • Dan B.

I never heard back from Zoo Town, and that was going to be my trigger to do something else. Does anyone know how we might reserve a room at Ruby's for free?

    May 25, 2012

  • Lance F.

I've been playing with Riak. I'd be happy to put together a getting started talk on it.

    May 24, 2012

  • Terry B.

Any further movement on this? I've got a project that I think might be right for something like MongoDB, and I'd sure make the trek to Missoula to listen to what other guys have to say, and bat some ideas and questions around.

I was reminded at Barcamp this weekend that we haven't had this meetup. It sounds like Jonathon, Jordan, and Lance are interested in presenting. Can we start thinking about a date? I'll find a good location once we know that those three can make it.

    April 15, 2012

  • Dan B.

Wow Jonathon and Jordan. I'd certainly be keen on absorbing your experiences. Is there any time that may work best for you and/or any other events you want to sync it up to?

    December 30, 2011

  • Jonathon W.

@Lance - I've been using MongoDB from Python, but I believe there are mature bindings for most mainstream languages.
@Jordan - I remember you talking about Riak at a recent meetup -- I'd love to hear more about it. If we end up both going, perhaps you can just ride with me and save gas :)

    December 30, 2011

  • Lance F.

That would be awesome, Jonathon! What do you access MongoDB with? Ruby, C#, PHP, or something else?

    December 30, 2011

  • Jonathon W.

Well, I'm over here in the Bozeman, group, but I've been using MongoDB for about 18 months now on multiple projects. I'm a big fan -- for the right use case. If we settle on the date, I might be able to make the trip over...

This would be great! I could talk about CouchDB , or Redis (which is kind-of a NoSQL DB, but interesting in its own ways.)

I'd love to hear about Cassandra if anyone has experience with it.

I'm not using it, and I can't say that I'm thinking of making the switch, but I'm always interested in hearing more about these topics. I'm sure I'd come to a meet up about this.
