What we're about

Data Science is about using computing and statistics to make sense of data. There's a lot of interest around the Monterey Bay in data science coming from businesses, universities, and government. Let's get together, get to know each other, and share knowledge and experience.

Most meetings will be held at CSU Monterey Bay and will include one or two short talks followed by discussion and open networking. Refreshments will be provided.

Everyone is welcome to give a talk. Anything data science-related is welcome, including tutorials, case studies, and briefs on interesting papers.

Organizers:

Glenn Bruns, Dept. of Computer Science, CSUMB

Steven Kim, Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics, CSUMB

Alana Unfried, Dept. of Mathematics and Statistics, CSUMB

Usual meeting time and location:

7:30 - 9:00 pm, first Thursday of each month

Cal. State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB)

Joel and Dena Gambord Business and Information Technology Building, room 119

Parking:

Parking can be busy at CSUMB, especially with new buildings being constructed. A good parking option is to park in lot 71 on Inter-Garrison Rd. at the intersection of Inter-Garrison and 6th Ave. Pay for parking using the yellow box you see when entering the lot.

Challenge: predict whether a credit card holder will default

Chapman Science Academic Center

This is our third and last meeting on the credit card default data. This dataset (from Taiwan) shows some demographic data and recent payment history for about 30,000 people. In December we started exploring the data and in January several members presented their work in exploring and visualizing the data. This month we'll share our work in predicting whether a credit card user will default on a payment. Please join us even if you haven't come to the December or January meetings, or if you don't get a chance to work with the data. This is a binary classification problem: the goal is to predict the value of the variable 'default payment next month' that can take a value of 0 or 1. Here are the steps to take if you'd like to try to participate in the classification challenge: 1. Download the training data (see link below) and train your classifier. 2. Download the test data (link below) and use your classifier to make predictions on the test data. The test data set does not contain values for 'default payment next month'. 3. Email your predictions to co-organizer Glenn Bruns ([masked]) in the form of a CSV file with a single column. Please don't send multiple files or files in other formats. Your submitted file should have as many rows as the test data file. At the meeting we'll announce which submission had the highest accuracy and everyone will have a chance to discuss their work. Information on the data set can be found here: https://archive.ics.uci.edu/ml/datasets/default+of+credit+card+clients Here's a link to the training data: https://drive.google.com/file/d/12RW8tPnq2GKPTXOgFFkaDftQlJ7PWJod/view?usp=sharing Here's a link to the test data: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OtNxzZsdWkugRMJFnP2XZTTg_kyzuxK3/view?usp=sharing Please email co-organizer Steven Kim ([masked]) or Glenn Bruns ([masked]) if you have questions or are having problems accessing the data. ---------- Parking info: The easiest parking option is to park in lot 71 on Inter-Garrison Rd. at the intersection of Inter-Garrison and 6th Ave. Unfortunately, you will need to pay for parking, using the yellow box that you see as you enter the lot.
