Jazz Stroll Weekend in Clarksburg

  • The twice-a-year Friday night Jazz Strolls in Clarksburg are no longer stand alone events, according to organizers. After three years of offering area music fans a Friday night cornucopia of live jazz ensembles, the West Virginia Jazz Society has joined forces with the Bridgeport Arts Council to produce a second jazz themed event to follow on Saturday nights, the Benedum Jazz Festival in Bridgeport. Together they will form Holiday Jazz Weekend (in Harrison County) commencing December 9 in Clarksburg at My Little Cupcake, with a premier of a jazz documentary followed by a live tribute show. The Weekend would conclude the next evening, December 10, with an all star concert featuring the weekend’s headliners. In between, there would be ten other performances, five each night in each city. “We want to broaden the scope of the jazz artistry we present, so we are reacting out to new markets in new communities,” said Rose Ann Policano, Vice President of the West Virginia Jazz Society (WVJS), the group working with the Bridgeport Arts Council and the Barbara B. Highland Fund for the Arts to create the two-night extravaganza. “We obviously hope many people turn out for the jazz,” added Policano, “but most of all we want to make sure that everyone who does attend has a first class experience that will bring them back.” Complete schedules for each day are still in the works, but planners report that sixvenues are lined up for Clarksburg’s Holiday Jazz Stroll on Friday night. Additional venues and the Benedum Civic Center will provide the backdrop for the Benedum Jazz Festival on Saturday. Saturday’s line up will include a Bridgeport Arts Council’s Arts Donors Reception, and performances at Meagher’s Pub and Mia Margeurita’s along with a “Jazz & Tapas” event in the Benedum Civic Center featuring a “Jazz Stroll All Stars” ensemble. There will be no admission charge to any of the performances. “Each of the venues will have their own seating policies and dining options,” said Mary Kay Greer, BAC President. “Thanks to our generous sponsors, especially the Highland Fund for the Arts.” Organizers say there are still opportunities for people to get involved as street vendors and artists. The Friday, December 9, Uptown Jazz
Stroll in Clarksburg has evolved into a two day
showcase of live jazz performance in Harrison
County, with the advent of Benedum
Jazz, a new event to be held in Bridgeport the
    following day, December 10.
    Taken together, organizers are heralding
Holiday Jazz Weekend in Harrison County as
a merger of two complementary jazz festivals
    in neighboring cities.
Beginning at 6:30pm and continuing until
midnight the next day, over 30 jazz artists will
perform in ten different venues scattered
across uptown Clarksburg and in the community-owned
    Benedum Civic Center in Bridgeport.
Holiday Jazz Weekend is being produced
by the West Virginia Jazz Society (WVJS)
as an expansion of the successful Jazz Stroll
events held in Clarksburg’s business district
    the past three years.

Since the first Holiday-season Jazz Stroll in
December 2013, the WVJS has partnered with
Clarksburg Uptown, Inc. to produce Strolls
that have grown from four to six venues, some
    with multiple bands.
Over time, audience interest in a two-night
offering grew, as did interest from other Harrison
County communities in staging live jazz
performance in their venues and facilities, according
    to WVJS officials.
To accommodate market demand and to
empower the involvement of new venues,
WVJS sought support from the Harrison Cultural
    Foundation’s Barbara Highland Fund for
    the Arts.

The result is a diverse offering of live jazz
artistry for the Uptown Jazz Stroll, including a
command performance in a Methodist Church,
and tribute concert in a cupcake bakery, and a
riotous extravaganza reminiscent of a 1930’s
Berlin cabaret, but held in Kelly’s Irish Pub.
    Benedum Jazz begins Saturday, December,
10, with a noontime show at Maplewood
Senior Center, a three-set show by guitarist,
Dan Baker in Mia Margherita, and a doublebill
in Benedum Civic Center featuring the Holiday
Jazz All Stars, an ensemble made up of
headliners from the Uptown Jazz Stroll the
    previous evening.
