• Startup Pitch Practice!

    Riff

Pitch Practice is on again! We're giving you, the upcoming new startups of Perth, a chance to practice your pitch in front of the non-intimidating and supportive Morning Startup audience. Why pitch? Because communicating what your startup is about is an essential skill that only gets better with practice. Every pitch will teach you something about the way you tell your story, allowing you to refine it so it has an even bigger impact on the next audience. This is a great opportunity to get some practice under your belt in a casual, friendly atmosphere. The plan: Each startup gets three minutes to pitch and two minutes to answer questions from the audience. You'll be clapped out as soon as the 3-minute mark is reached. Only three minutes? WTF?! Yeah, that's right. Three minutes prevents waffling, keeps the audience listening, and gives more people the opportunity to have a go! You need a short, succinct pitch that clearly communicates: 1. The problem you're solving. 2. Who the customer is. 3. Why your startup is unique. 4. Can it be copied? Does it stand out? Is it interesting in some way? 5. The market opportunity. 6. How you are going to market/sell. 7. Call to action. Are you looking for investment, co-founders, talent, advice? Register to pitch Spaces are limited, so if you're interested in pitching, email us ASAP at [masked]. Include your contact details and a quick description of your startup and we'll be in touch! If you're reading this thinking "I should do it, but it's totally out of my comfort zone", then email us now ([masked]) before you give yourself another excuse not to. You won't regret it! (https://medium.com/the-mission/get-out-of-your-comfort-zone-your-success-depends-on-it-23f6be0f740d) Register to watch Even if you're not interested in pitching, please come along and be part of the audience to ask questions and give feedback. There will also be half an hour of general networking after the pitches to provide feedback one-on-one. Just hit the button on this page to tell us you're coming. So come along, bring a Voltage Espresso coffee (tell them Morning Startup sent you for a discount), and start the day inspired! It's free!

  • Be more creative and communicate better using LEGO Serious Play.

All work and no play make Jacques a dull boy. Don’t be like Jacques. Let your inner grownup sleep in on May 29th, because this one’s going to be a little bit different! To get the best ideas flowing in your team, you can do better than talk and sticky notes. “The way we’ve always done it” for meetings and workshops works really well for some, but not so well for many others. To get the absolute best out of our teams when it really counts, we need a fresh approach that taps in to an organisation’s collective intelligence, that engages everyone creatively, and that drives really powerful conversation. If we can do it with a big pile of LEGO in the middle of the table, so much the better! On May 29th, join Joel Birch from the Very Serious Business Co as he demonstrates the power of LEGO® Serious Play®, a method for harnessing the full range of expertise, creativity and perspectives in your organisation to solve complex problems. It’s playful, it’s fun, everyone leans forward to contribute, and the insights can be profound. The LEGO bricks themselves are the medium to build and express complex ideas through storytelling and metaphor. It unleashes creative energy, modes of thought and ways of seeing that most adults have forgotten they even possessed.

  • The Circular Economy: Moving Beyond Design Thinking with Dylan Lamb.

The Circular Economy movement in Australia has begun. Queensland and South Australia are leading the charge, and the time is now for Western Australia to get on board. A circular economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose) aimed at minimising waste and making the most of resources to build economic, natural, and social capital. Is the Circular Economy just another buzzword or is it having real-world impacts on the future of products, materials and waste? How can your startup build on design thinking frameworks and become a part of the Circular economy? What free tools can startups and established businesses use for circularity? Who in Australia is already working in this exciting new global economy? Dylan Lamb, co-founder of Holonic, will answer all these questions and more in a fun and interactive way. About Dylan Lamb Dylan Lamb is the co-founder of Holonic (https://www.holonic.com.au), a systemic design and innovation consultancy, catalysing the Circular Economy movement in Western Australia. They are the continent's first certified Circulab (https://circulab.eu) consultant, a business game and methodology, that has been tried and tested by companies, governments, and academia across the world. The tool has been used by organisations such as IKEA, IDEO, Suez, Loreal and Interface to drive innovation. Dylan's business partner and Holonic co-founder Andrew Thomson, was the first cohort of graduates globally to complete a Circular Economy MBA, from Bradford University.
