What we're about

Welcome!

This is a meditation group for anyone interested in learning to meditate as well as for more experienced practitioners.

We meet on the first and third Saturday of every month from 10:30 am - noon at my house.

There is no fee for these meetings. I will recommend organizations and teachers that I consider ethically sound and beneficial for financial donations. This will give participants the opportunity to learn and benefit from the practice of giving, or dana.

We first sit for 40 minutes of silent meditation, with some light guidance throughout the session and mindful stretching 20 minutes into the meditation. I provide 20 minutes of teaching, followed by 15 minutes of sharing from group members.

The desire is for learning mindfulness, heart-opening, and peace practices in the comfort of my home and in a safe setting for all. I teach from a Buddhist tradition but people of any faith or secular tradition are welcome.

For those who are interested in my background or for whom this background is important (it would be to me!): This format follows a particular Buddhist practice called Insight Meditation. I spent my first three years in meditation practice in the Washington, DC area in affiliation with the Insight Meditation Community of Washington DC (IMCW) (my teacher was Ruth King).

After my spouse and I moved to the Durham, NC area, I continued to practice and also established the Morrisville (NC) Meditation Meetup. In 2019, I completed the Dedicated Practitioners Program (DPP6) at Spirit Rock Meditation Center.

My most recent online retreat was in July 2021: "Mindfulness and the Mahayana: An In-Depth Exploration of the Mahasatipatthana Sutta" offered by Sharon Salzberg and Robert Thurman. In Spring 2021 I attended: "Early Buddhist Meditation I: The Four Establishments of Mindfulness with Bhikkhu Anālayo and Bhikkhunī Dhammadinnā." Prior to that in 2021 I attended "Nourish the Heart: A Chanting Retreat With Kittisaro, Thanissara, and Jaya Rudgard." I retired from a long professional career in IT consulting and the federal Government in 2020.

May you and all beings be well.

Oct 2 Meetup: Taste the Awakening Secret Sauce

Online event

Welcome!
When we're waking up in life, things take on a brighter hue. We start to befriend our thoughtlife. Our emotions become less puzzling. There's a secret sauce to awakening, what Buddhism calls the seven factors of enlightenment. These are deeply satisfying mental states that we can practice tasting and immersing ourselves in. Let's dive in!

This group is for anyone who wants to learn simple methods and key knowledge for meditation. Regular meditation has many practical benefits. We can also develop wisdom and insight about life and how to change habits around suffering or pain. Each session we meditate with guidance from the teacher (me) with some open-ended practice. I provide a teaching and we discuss how meditation and mindfulness are going in our lives. Attend one session or several sessions -- there is no commitment. All I request is that people try to arrive on time (10:30 am) and respect the space that we create with mindful talking and participation.

We have now returned to physical, in-person Meetup sessions with an online option (via Zoom). I host the Meetup session in my home. The request is that everyone wear a mask in my house. Please message me through Meetup for my residential address or send me an email at [masked].

We meet on the first and third Saturday of every month. Offered freely through Meetup -- contributions not accepted. But I offer suggestions of ethically sound organizations for you to consider donating to. Practicing generosity is one of the best ways to free up our hearts and minds!

Warmly, Beth

Those who have attended sessions in my home know that there's a unique experience of meditating and learning with others that virtual sessions don't replicate very well. But I want to ensure that anyone who's still not comfortable with in-person meetings, or who currently lives in a geographically distant area, can participate online through the end of 2021. Again, just message me or send me an email for the Zoom link.
