Pisgah Intermediate Level Ride - Advanced Terrain

  • Pisgah National Forest Ranger Station

1600 Pisgah Hwy., Pisgah Forest, NC (map)

    35.284405 -82.726890

  • I will be driving a Black GMC Yukon XL with a hitch mounted bike rack
  • I had a request to do a ride down Black Mountain Trail at Pisgah, and thought it sounded like a great idea!  We will ride from the Ranger Station and travel up to the horse stables, onto Clawhammer, and onto Turkey Creek Road.  This brings us into the middle of Black Mountain Trail.

Some of the chunkier sections of Black are just above this point, so we will ride/hike up for a bit, then turn around and come back down the trail, continuing to the bottom of Lower Black.

At this point, we can head to the car, which makes it about a 10 mile ride, or we can do Sycamore Cove as well, which adds another 4 miles or so.

This ride is not for beginners!  There will be a good bit of climbing, with some hike a bike if you do the section above our entry to Black.  The downhill is not extreme, but there are a lot of spots where the adrenaline gets flowing.

As always, helmets are required.  Recommended are spare tubes, gloves, water, elbow and knee/shin guards if you have them, eye protection, etc.

I expect this to be a 3 or 4 hour ride, depending on how many people attend.
