For this yoga and hiking weekend, we will be based at the Rydal Centre in the grounds of the historic Rydal Hall, which is situated between Grasmere and Ambleside which are both popular destinations in the Lakes. Rydal has one of the smallest lakes in the lake district, but is in a picturesque and unspoilt corner of the Lakes, offering ample opportunities for walking.
The weekend will include two yoga classes each day, a guided hike each day, accommodation, breakfast and packed lunch on Saturday and Sunday and dinner on Saturday night in Rydal Hall.
There will be four yoga classes in total led by Yen, a fully qualified yoga teacher and personal trainer and there will be walks on both days led by Kevin, who is a fully qualified Mountain Leader. We both live in the Lake District and are also qualified in outdoor first aid.
We are using the barn just across the courtyard for yoga and our dinner on Saturday will be in the main hall itself.
The main building has plenty of history being owned by the Le Fleming family which can be traced back to 1126. Rydal Hall was built in the 16th century and has been enlarged, altered and refaced to what it is now currently, a grade II listed building along with the terraces, bridges, summerhouses and various outbuildings. The magnificent formal gardens are worthy of a visit, and offer a unique example of Edwardian gardening with beautiful lawns and flowers set against the fine architecture of the Hall itself. The Hall is now used as retreat and conference centre and is owned by the Diocese of Carlisle. The grounds of the hall are available for us explore freely for the whole weekend and provide tranquil and scenic gardens for a quiet moment or two.
Rydal Beck and its natural waterfalls flows through the grounds which include The Grot, a summerhouse built to view the waterfalls. The Grot is described in Wordsworth poem, An Evening Walk.
Our accommodation in the Rydal Centre was totally refurbished in 2012 and offers modern and comfortable dormitory style accommodation in the extensive grounds of Rydal Hall and is often used by walking and yoga groups.
There are separate showers on the ground floor, a spacious lounge and sitting area, a modern self-catering kitchen and also its own drying room.
We have the centre for our exclusive use and our group size will be 18. The centre itself sleeps 29 in total so we will have some spare space and bunks.
Bedding is included for this weekend however you will need to bring your own towels.
We also provide plenty of homemade tea and cake at the end of each days hiking.
Dinner on Saturday evening will be in the main hall itself.
We have our own private room for yoga in a beautiful converted barn. The yoga will be suitable for beginners and those who have practised before. There will be four yoga sessions during the weekend, and these take place on the Saturday and Sunday, before breakfast and after we return from our walks. The general focus of the morning sessions will be to energise and warm up the body for our walk, and in the afternoon, will be to stretch out those tired muscles and relax the body. There will be an emphasis on the breath and movement, and our priority is for the yoga to be enjoyable and safe for all.
A limited number of mats will be provided for your use but feel free to bring your own mat if you prefer.
Any queries regarding the yoga sessions, please contact us.
We have a great variety of lovely walks we can take directly from our accommodation including the walk alongside Rydal Water to Grasmere and Loughrigg Terrace which we will aim to do on Saturday.
On Saturday we can walk round to the quiet and picturesque Loughrigg Tarn and then over Loughrigg fell on our way back.
The walks may vary depending on the weather conditions at the time but we have lots of options to choose from.
Walks are graded easy to moderate, by Lake District standards, but please note that the Lake District is not flat, so there will be some steep and maybe rocky sections.
Our approximate walking time will be 5-6 hrs and distance 9-10 miles for the Saturday, and slightly less on the Sunday, so a good level of fitness is needed.
