  • A strenuous, but spectacular long weekend hiking in the historic and majestic Glencoe to climb to the summit of Ben Nevis and explore the surrounding area.

The Hostel is a wonderful old building which has been modernised throughout and now offers 4 bedrooms which sleep up to 24 guests.  The building itself dates back several centuries and is built in traditional crofting farmhouse style.  The outlook from around the hostel is magnificent with sweeping views of the glen.

We are close to the famous Clachaig Inn where we will be eating on Sunday evening.  All other meals, accommodation and guiding are included and there is an optional pickup from Glasgow airport.

The area is famous for its rugged mountain landscapes, stunning sea lochs and beautiful glens and Glencoe is at the centre of this region and offers some of the most spectacular views, walks and landscapes in the UK.

We will be staying at the Glencoe Independent Hostel, which is in the heart of Glencoe and surrounded with spectacular scenery and is just a short walk from the Clachaig Inn.

The highlight of our long weekend will be a hike to the summit of Ben Nevis, but we will also take in other mountain walks around Glencoe and pay a visit to the famous and atmospheric Clachaig.

Glencoe really is one of the most iconic and memorable places you’ll visit in Scotland and whilst you are here we will fully explore the mountains, glens, forests and waterfalls – it’s a wonderful playground for those who love the great outdoors! We are quite likely to come across some wildlife during our stay too, as its often possible to see roe and red deer in the grounds as well as pine martens, buzzards and many other birds.

So join us for a great long weekend of hiking in the area around Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.

The hostel provides warm comfy beds with all bed linen provided and there is heating in all bedrooms as well as a welcoming open log fire in the cosy lounge.  There are hot showers, as well as a well equipped kitchen, separate dining room and a fantastic drying room with commercial de-humidifier.

There is no need to be separated from the world of work and friends at home (unless you want to be!) as there is a metered internet terminal available for use and free wi-fi in reception.

    Tripadvisor review
“The hostel is well maintained and clean and the rooms are kept warm. The owners are really friendly and always able to offer advice on walks, weather etc.”

The walking for this weekend is hard and therefore you need to have a good level of fitness in order to make the most of this weekend.

We will aim to hike to the summit of Ben Nevis on the Saturday, but we will be keeping an eye on the weather forecast so may decide to move the days around depending on how this is looking. We will arrange a group pickup from the hostel to the base of Ben Nevis where we will take the direct route to the summit.  The summit is at 1344m and as we start virtually at sea level the route takes us up the full 1344m of ascent in order to reach the top.

The track is well used and is not a technically difficult walk but it is steep and will take a full day of 7-9 hours to complete.

We are able to offer a variety of walks on the other days depending on fitness and weather conditions as Kevin is a qualified UK and International Mountain Leader and Yen is a trained Hill and Moorland Leader, so we can offer a choice of low and high level walks.  We will also have a second walk leader, so we can offer a choice of another summit walk for those feeling fit.

On Sunday we will offer a choice of walks.  For those feeling fit there will be another summit walk to the another spectacular mountain in Glencoe, such as Bidean Nam Bian.  This is a high and challenging mountain walk, but if the weather is good, gives amazing views up and down the glen and of the surrounding mountains. We will also offer a circular glen walk following mountain streams and also giving wonderful views.  Another challenging walk, exploring some of the finest mountain scenery in Scotland.

In the evening we will all head out to the Clachaig Inn for Sunday dinner.

On Monday, our pick up is not until 2:30 so we can still do a good days walking, and will aim to do a mid-level walk to the moderate summit of the Pap of Glencoe, which is one of the most striking summits in the area and gives wonderful views across the loch and to the higher summits.

There will also be an option to do a lovely scenic walk to the village of Glencoe and the Loch, through woodland and beside lochans (small lake).
