  • Summary

This is a real opportunity to get totally away from city life, slow down and enjoy a different pace of life.  Great scenery, the chance to sea a variety of wildlife and some fantastic high and low level hiking in wonderful surroundings.

Sometimes referred to as Scotland in Miniature this is an island with a huge amount to offer packed into a small space.

The great granite ridges may be lower in stature than those in the Highlands, but they are the equal of any mountains in Scotland for sheer grandeur – and in the scrambling and climbing challenges they can present. The coastline has some superb scenery and a wonderful outlook, whether towards Ayrshire or to Kintyre. And the island itself is packed with history and human interest, from the ancient standing stones on Machrie Moor to the modern-day Buddhist retreat on Holy Island.

If you have always wanted to get away to the Scottish islands for some great hiking then this is the perfect opportunity.

    Overview

The Isle of Arran is often described as Scotland in miniature and this Arran hiking break will explore the best it has to offer. It has many mountains typical of the best of the Scottish highlands and areas of lowland with rolling hills, all wrapped up and surrounded by the glistening sea.  It is also quite easy to get to from Glasgow and we will be offering a convenient transfer direct from the airport to our Hostel in the lovely fishing village of Lochranza. The hostel is in a lovely quiet location and overlooks the castle and harbour.

The Isle of Arran in Scotland is one of the most southerly Scottish islands and sits in the Firth of Clyde between Ayrshire and Kintyre. Arran is 19 miles long by 10 miles wide but has a remarkable diversity of landscapes and seascapes.  The pretty villages on Arran’s beautiful coastline are complemented by a rugged and mountainous interior in the north and green rolling hills and woodland in the south.

Our Arran Hiking break is an extended weekend of four days hiking giving us a great opportunity to get to know this beautiful island.  It is also timed to coincide with our Glencoe and Ben Nevis hiking weekend, so it is possible to combine the breaks into a fantastic Scottish two centre highlands and islands hiking week. This is a real opportunity to get away from the city life, slow down and experience some of the best hiking in the Scottish Highlands.

The youth hostel is also located on the Cock of Arran trail, which provides a beautifully scenic low level trek. The youth hostel garden is a great spot to watch wildlife, including red deer, red squirrel, grey seals, otters and golden eagles. Lochranza Youth Hostel benefits from a great bus connection and the bus stop is only 5 minutes walk away.

A nearby distillery close to Lochranza Youth Hostel is arguably the best in Scotland, and utilises the smooth water that trickles into the glen. Arran has many other activities on offer including off-road biking, pony-trekking, fishing, golfing and watersports.

    Walks

There is such a great variety of hikes to choose from we will select which one to do each day depending on weather conditions.  So for example Goat Fell is the highest mountain on the island and therefore an absolute must on one of the days.  There are also some great Glen walks, taking us up beautiful valleys, plus of course many scenic coastal walks.

We will have transport on the island, so some days we take a short ride to get to the start and return to the hostel at the end of the day.

And there are other historic sites to explore including the Neolithic standing stones, which make a very atmospheric walk.

There is also a lot of wildlife on the island and it is possible to sometimes see basking seals in the bays and on the beaches, as well as a wide variety of birdlife.
