North Wales, North Wales
The first snows of winter have fallen on the summits. Ben Nevis, the Cairngorms, the Lake District and even Snowdon have had their first dusting of snow - now's the time to see what winter mountaineering can be like, if you've never been out in winter before, or if you just want to get 'in the zone' ready for the 2017 season.
We will make several mountain ascents under winter conditions according to where the best snow conditions are (in Wales or the Lake District). If you have never used an axe axe or crampons before, now is the ideal opportunity to learn. If you have, but want to develop and improve your skills, then this will be ideal for you too.
The location will be chosen nearer the time depending on where the best conditions are. The exact start and ends time can be varied to suit the travel times of those wanting to attend.
Exact details will vary according to the weather and snow conditions but we will aim to cover:
• Understanding winter weather, its effect on the mountains and assessing snow conditions.
• Planning a winter mountaineering day.
• Winter mountain navigation.
• Introduction to using an ice axe and crampons...
•...and we will aim to follow some interesting and spectacular routes to whichever summits we tackle.
The cost (£125.00) covers instruction for 3 days and the use of some specialist equipment only. It does not include travel, food or accommodation. However, hostel accommodation can be arranged for you at £25 per night, therefore £75 for Friday to Sunday nights. A two-day option is also available at a reduced price for those who cannot take Monday off.
You will need to bring all your own personal equipment, which includes suitable clothing, winter mountaineering boots, an ice axe, and crampons. (Boots, axe and crampons might be available for hire locally at extra cost and I will try to help with this if possible). A full equipment list will be provided on booking and I will provide specialist advice and recommendations if necessary.
If there are no prevailing winter conditions, then instead we will cover the same sort of activities but adapted for the conditions on the day - navigation, route-finding, scrambling etc.
A minimum of 4 attendees is required.
If you would like to attend please RSVP to the event AND email me on [masked]
