High Hut Overnight Snowshoe/hike

Sitting atop a high ridge in our South District, High Hut is both challenging and rewarding to reach.  The unobstructed view of Rainier is one of the best anywhere, and if that's not enough, there are views of St. Helens, the Cascade Range, the Olympics and part of Mt Adams.  High Hut sleeps eight.

High Hut can be reached via a groomed logging road (beginner to intermediate skiing skills are recommended) or via an ungroomed backcountry route via Anderson Lakes.  Long steep slopes will entice expert telemarkers while snowshoers explore the more moderate treed slopes near the hut. Info from MMTA website.

We are thinking about making a community dinner (more info to come closer to day of event), but breakfast will be left to individuals.

Bring your 10 essential and sleeping bag.

Statistics: 10 miles round trip with a 2400' elevation gain.

No refunds unless we get another person to take your spot- so please make sure you can attend this event.

SNO-PARK Pass REQUIRED!!

If you get a one day permit (sno-park), you will also need a discover pass (one day or annual).

Please don't forget gas money for drivers!

I will be driving but can only take 3 passengers, which means I will need one more driver with a sno-park pass to drive.

Directions: Mountain Highway (WA-7 S). Drive 2 miles E from Ashford on SR 706. Turn right (south) onto Kernahan Rd. Proceed south for 1.4 miles, going straight at the turn for Paradise Estates and Skate Creek Rd, to FS 85 Rd. Follow the signs to  Sno-Park.

I am recommending everyone bring their traction devices as well if you don't already carry them with you.

Thanks, Chuck! We'll take you up on our offer to carpool from the park-in-ride to the trailhead. Our offer with anyone from Olympia to carpool to the park-in-ride remains. It sounds like it will be okay with leaving my car at the park-in-ride unless someone knows there have been problems with that particular one.

Okay. Here is the plan. Let me know if I am misunderstanding. First, I am picking up Maryjane, and going to the park and ride in Lakewood. There, I will pick up you, Azar, and another person whose name I forget. That gives me a full load. In theory, I can carry two more people in the third row, but then I won't have much room for backpacks.

Good. The plan is clarified. I don't pick up anybody before I get to the P&R. I will take Maryjane, John, and Maggy to the trailhead. Everybody else rides with Bonnie.

    Hi All,

Maggie and I are planning to ride together from Olympia to the park-in-ride. I have a few questions about car logistics. 1) Does anyone want to carpool with us from Olympia to the park-in-ride? 2) Chuck, can Maggie and I carpool with you to the trailhead so that we don't have to take our car to the trailhead? 3) If we can carpool to the trailhead with Chuck, is there a safe place to park our car other than the park-in-ride? Thanks! John

The problem is that I live way north in Bellevue. Are you willing to drive that far?

Btw, if you do want to drive up here, I will be quite happy to carpool with you.

I have read and will abide by rules!
Bonnie & Mischellean, if possible I would like to carpool with you. I will provide $ for gas and Snow Park pass. I will bring some snacks from the Philippines!

Hi Lucia, Can I come to your house and leave my car in your driveway. We drive together to Bonnie or Mischellean?

      1 · December 11, 2013

Azar, that sounds good to me! I will send you my home address as soon I return to the US (text)

The Mcdonald's is located right in front of the park-n-ride and is open 24 hours and well lit, but I understand everyone's concerns. I am open to any suggestions from the Oly group.

    December 10, 2013

  • Bonnie

    Hi John,
Azar will be coming from Olympia too. The three of you may want to carpool to the park-n-ride together.

    December 10, 2013

  • Mischellean

Just a thought....I do not want to leave my car at the P&R overnight so I will be dropped off. Maryjane will park at my house and I probably have room for one more car at my place. Just a thought

It looks like it is not a good idea to leave your car overnight at a P&R. I am driving to the Sno-Park, so I want to arrange picking up passengers at their house or at some other location where it is okay to park overnight. I am coming from the north (Bellevue), so let me know if it is convenient for me to pick you up. You can either say it here or with a private message.

      December 9, 2013

    • Mischellean

Ok lucia you can park here. Rick will give us a ride to the p&r. I will send you the address
