Haskell Workshop: Getting Started with Haskell

  • Jan 20, 2014 · 7:00 PM
  • codecentric AG

Have you been intrigued by Haskell but have not had the opportunity to start learning it?

We'll get you up and running. This workshop will get you ready to write your first Haskell programs. We will help you to get your machine (compiler, editor, etc) set up and show you the first steps of programming in Haskell. Once everyone is set up and we've taught you the basic concepts, we'll launch into an open end hackathon so that you can get hand on experience writing your first programs while having people around that can help you when you get stuck.

If you are an experienced Haskeller then your help is more than welcome! If you're interested in Haskell but haven't tried it out then this is your chance to get started!

We're still looking for a location. If you can provide a place please let us know!

Interesting topics, expert speakers, good athmosphere. A bit slow progress through the presentations at times perhaps. I especially liked the numerous practical exercises!

Unfortunately, I discovered this group too late. Any chance that a similar workshop will be held in the future? I feel that I missed much :-(

Interesting to see the slides. Wow, that's actually a lot of ground you covered there. Did anyone actually end up implementing HashLife in Haskell?

Unfortunately not, we just got the basics covered. Maybe next time

    Hi everyone!

I was really blown away by the huge turn out and hope everyone got something out of it, even if the talks and exercises had few rough spots here and there.

Also checkout the next meetup, where Andres will give a talk. Even though this talk is not aimed at beginners, he will focus on concepts so everyone should get something out of it.

    cheers
    Paul

Yes, I'm going to try very hard to make sure that participants who are beginners in Haskell will still have the chance to take away something from my talk.

Workshop excercises got me more interested in Haskell. Looking forward to doing lisp implementation :) and the next meetup.

Thanks a lot guys for the event and the effort you put into it. Apart from minor bumps (which I didn't mind) it was very well organized. It was great that there were also experts around to help.

Presentations too long (too many subjects), amazing for the rest

we'll work on the content. Thanks for hint!

Thank you for the feedback! We'll try to keep it a bit shorter next time!

Exercises and people were great. IO monads talk was missing some red line through it and a slide on motivation ("What is the problem we want to solve?"). Thanks a lot!

can't we also use leksah or the like?

    January 20, 2014

    • αλεx π

You can use what you want. Although we won't be able to help you in case your IDE misbehaves. We've built an image that is pre-configured with everything, and most likely we'll be able to solve any issue that pops up with it.

I can suggest registering on FP Complete: https://www.fpcomplete.com/ You'll be able to quickstart the best way with it.

    It's an online haskell editor.

Any pointers to setting up vim for haskell development? Or is the basic syntax highlighting all I need?

    Dear attendees,

If you don't have a working Haskell installation on your system (we'll need ghc & cabal), please install the Haskell plattform before coming to the meetup on Monday:

    http://www.haskell.org/platform/

Also: Bring your laptop! The plan is to get our fingers dirty ;)

    cheers Paul

Cool1! Looking forward to get my hands dirty with Haskell again.
