No one’s religion should be used to harm others. Yet, the Tennessee legislature is aggressively advancing bills next week that target our LGBTQ neighbors, religious minorities and others for discrimination in the name of religion. Americans United is fighting for equality and religious freedom for all – and we are unified in Tennessee against those who would weaponize religious freedom as a means to harm others.
House Bill 1152 would allow adoption agencies – including those receiving public funding – to discriminate against parents and children based on the religious views of the agency. As we’ve seen in South Carolina with our client Aimee Maddonna, policies like this are being used by taxpayer-funded agencies to unconstitutionally discriminate against prospective foster parents and volunteers. No child should be denied an opportunity for a loving, stable home when one is available to them.
Join our partners at Tennessee Equality Project (TEP) and wear red at the sub-committee hearing for HB 1152 on Monday, March 5th
