Night Prayer
1,500 years ago, in a monastery on the hill outside the village, one would hear the monks and nuns sing their last prayer of the day, called “Compline,” or Night Prayer. Mostly they chanted the Psalms, sometimes without accompaniment, sometimes guided by the organ. This ancient practice is being revived today in many places around our world, because, somehow, it expresses awe in the presence of the Holy One which no worship band can ever touch. The simple music speaks to the soul. Ancient music, in the darkness of the end of the day, candles, and the silence of our hearts. Night Prayer is the work of the singers. The singers show up to sing their prayers because that is what they do. The prayers are theirs. If others come to listen, that is good, but not required for the singers to be drawn into the presence of the Holy One.
