Social Media for Social Good

  • Sep 18, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • UNC-TV

Join us as we dive deep into Social Media. We'll look at social media best practices, techniques to build community, and overall engagement strategies using Twitter, Facebook, and mobile apps.

We plan an unusual program. The discussion will be led by Paula Jones, Director of Technology at the N.C. Center for Nonprofits, using Google+ Hangouts, because Paula will be in Concord, NC, for the Center for Nonprofits conference. So we’ll get a little experience with practical application of social media! If technology fails, we’ll have a discussion.

In any case, we'll seek to answer some of these big questions:

  • What makes a good social media post?
  • How does mobile storytelling change the landscape of social sharing?
  • What is your favorite social app? Why? What are the features that drive a mobile community?
  • What are some brands that are doing social media right? Why?
  • Who are some nonprofits doing social media right? Why?
  • Who should you empower at your organization to tell your stories online?
  • What are some of your favorite examples of social campaigns?
  • What sorts of stories should nonprofits tell?

This is one of many events held across the NetSquared global network with a focus on Social Media for Social Good.

Pizza (sponsored by NTEN & PINInc/RTPNet) and discussion starting at 6:30, program at 7:00.

Many thanks to UNC-TV for being our host for this meeting. If you arrive late and can't get in, call our host, James McGurk, cell phone[masked]-8873. It's hard to see the front door from the meeting room.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Apologies for the Tweetdeck at last night's Hangout! The experience was very valuable in several ways. Thank you for including me.

Many thanks to Nancy Shoemaker for filling in at the last minute (when my car died), to Paula Jones for persevering to connect to the meeting from Concord with a failing computer and/or hotel Internet connection, and to all those who attended at UNC-TV for their patience as we sorted out technical difficulties. We had 4 in the Google Hangout -- UNC-TV, Mary Rack (in Michigan), Paula with Nancy Rose and Jeanne Allen in Concord, and me in Chapel Hill.

Lessons: A hardwired, Ethernet, connection is safest (needed at UNC-TV, the rest of us were OK wireless). We think the occasional beeps we all heard came from Mary's use of Tweetdeck notification.

Good conversation at UNC-TV was enhanced by Paula's observations and questions. So this all worked, though it took a while.

Yes, you are a member of the meetup group. I'm planning to have the hangout only for people who have been invited. So I'll invite you. It will be good to see you again!
