Sometimes called body prayer or group moving meditation, the Dances were started in the 1960's in San Francisco by American Sufi Samuel Lewis as an initiative to spread peace through the arts. They are now done worldwide, bringing together people of different faiths to chant and dance for peace and joy. Simple, meditative, joyous circle dances are taught in the moment using sacred phrases from many wisdom traditions. There are no performers or audience. We join hands in a circle to dance and sing “three-dimensional prayers” to create peace and joy in and beyond ourselves. No experience or partner is needed, only an open heart. The third Thursday Dance circle is led by Subhana Cathy Graf. In June, July and August we dance at Centering Space. Outside in the garden if weather permits, or inside in the air conditioning. September through May we dance at Lakewood Presbyterian Church.
