THIS IS A JOINT MEET UP WITH THE CENTRAL OHIO HIKERS and BACKPACKERS GROUP.
I last hiked this park in the fall. And with the fall colors and views of the lake, this was a very scenic hike. I can't speak for the beauty of the place at this time of year however. So come for the exercise and social aspect. You will feel great afterwards regardless. This park is about a two hour drive south. The hike should take us about 6 hours or so to complete. I plan on keeping a 2.5 mph moving pace. There are a few hills that give the legs a good work out (not to mention the cardio system). But other sections are gently rolling. We will be on the Bridle Trail for most of the hike so there is a possibility that we will get to see some horses out there with us. We saw 68 horses on the fall hike.
I consider this a Moderate terrain/ Moderate speed hike. We will take breaks for rest and snacks. So bring plenty of water and something to snack on. We will hike, Rain or Shine. Please dress accordingly for the weather. And it is always a good idea to bring rain gear/poncho just in case.
Restrooms: There are restrooms on the route we will be taking. A rare convenience that you don't get on many of our hikes. There is one at the trailhead, and at least two more dispersed throughout the rest of the hike. So for those that are new to hiking on longer hikes and are concerned with having to use the woods as your bathroom, this should ease your mind.
Dining Option: For those of you who enjoy dining with the group after our hikes, we can stop at Schlepps Diner on our way home. They serve Home-style meals at a very reasonable price. And they have a wide selection of homemade pies.
Their address is: 66645 Belmont Morristown Road, Belmont, OH 43718 (740)[masked]
Notes: The address for the park does not take you to the place we are meeting at. It does hovever, take you directly past the entrance to the park. When you see the park entrance sign (it will be on your left if coming from I-77), turn in and then immediately turn right towards the office. Go past the ranger station/office, and follow the signs towards campground “C”. The shower house (we'll meet here) will be on your left across the street from the camp store. You will notice a log cabin and other out buildings including a barn that has a Mail Pouch ad on the side across the stree from the showerhouse parking lot.
Don’t forget to bring a change of clothes, especially if you plan on eating with us afterwards. This of course is just a suggestion. But a change of clothes this far from home is always a good idea. (You never know when you may trip into a muddy puddle).
