Remember how much fun you had at the drive-in? Did you miss last year's fly-in movie, or the one from the year before? It's time to try something new - the fly-in movie experience! Join us for a fun-filled aviation evening under the stars in the beautiful Berkshires! MASS MoCA (http://www.massmoca.org/event_details.php?id=822) (Museum of Contemporary Art) is sponsoring movie night at the North Adams airport (KAQW). They will be converting a huge white 90' by 22' hangar door (brand new roll of white "canvas") into a giant movie screen. You should plan on landing by 6pm sharp as the runway will be NOTAMed closed between 6:00pm - 11:00pm. This kid-friendly event begins at 6:30pm. There will a great lineup of vintage aircraft parked on static display. Before the feature begins, local vendors will offer popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers, soft drinks, wine, and beer for sale.
The evening may start with aviation-themed cartoons for the kids, as it has in the past. The featured movie begins at 8:00pm: Airplane!, a comedy that features Leslie Neilsen and Kareem Abdul Jabbar, among others. It has become an aviation coemdy classic. The film is $7/adult, $3/kids, or $14/for a carload. There is a 10% discount for Mass Moca members. BUT, fly-in pilots and passengers are admitted for FREE!
Again, you *MUST* arrive promptly by 6:00pm as the runway will be CLOSED from 6:00pm - 11:00pm and X's will be going out on the runway. After the movie, you have three options:
#1) Plan for a late night departure, but remember, you are in the hills. From experience, a good departure strategy is to takeoff runway 29, turn right and head over the city lights of Williamstown nearby, which is lower terrain. Circle over the lights until you reach a safe altitude if you cannot see the hills. The highest bump is Mount Greylock just to the southeast at 3,491 feet.
#2) We have been welcomed to camp out under our wings. There is a full-service supermaket, STOP & SHOP, open from 6am - midnight within 500 feet of the FBO, so you can plan on shopping for food on site.
#3) Plan on staying at one of the many fine hotels and B&B's in town and tour Williamstown the next day. The Redwood Motel (http://www.redwood-motel.com/) ((413)[masked]) is right across the street from the airport. Other local hotels in the area include The Orchards (http://www.orchardshotel.com/) ((413)[masked]), the Williams Inn (http://www.williamsinn.com/) ((413)[masked]), and Hotel North Adams (http://www.larkinhospitality.com/hotel-north-adams.php) ((413)[masked]).
If you stay overnight, you should also check out the area's three amazing museums, which are all within 3 miles of the airport: Mass MoCA (http://www.massmoca.org/), the Clark Art Institute (http://www.clarkart.edu/), and the Williams College Museum of Art (http://wcma.williams.edu/).
Remember: Arrival Deadline is 6:00pm!
