To watch and take pictures of Vaux's Swifts at the Chapman School

Every year Vaux's Swifts come to roost ( sleep ) at sunset to the chimney of the Chapman School in Portland. On the Audobun Society of Portland website the time fot this event is Sept 01, 2011- Sept 30, 2011.

Background

Every year in late August, one of Portland’s most spectacular natural events begins: Thousands of Vaux’s Swifts gather in the city as they prepare to migrate to Central America and Venezuela.

Migrating swifts often use chimneys as roosts (places to sleep), and they are likely to return to the same roost year after year. One swift population has been returning to the Chapman chimney since the 1980s, and it is one of the largest known roosting sites of migrating Vaux's Swifts.

We can each bring a picnic to share with others and enjoy the show.

If anyone wants to ride with Holly and me from Vancouver, let me know so we can decide where and when to meet. I advise others to carpool because parking is difficult! Also if you are bringing food, consider posting a note about what you are bringing so we can bring a variety of things. There is a hill just south of the chimney. Look for us there. I want to get closer to the top rather than lower. Again. be aware.... these are hard to shoot.

Here's a link to the Audubon Society's "Swift Watch" FAQs:
    http://audubonportland.org/local-birding/swiftwatch/faqs
Looks like we should be there in plenty of time to stake out a good viewing spot.

You know I have plans this weekend on Sunday and Monday. But next weekend would be okay. What about others? Plus there are already 2 meetups this weekend.

So, maybe Sun or Mon? 9/2-3 I can drive by on Fri and see if there is any action.

from experience, there are more birds earlier than later in the month, As the weeks go by, there are fewer. Also carpool/public transit. The school is right by Wallace park and parking is very difficult in the evening as lots of people gather. I likely won't go as I went last year.

The Audubon site says 9/1 - 9/30 - it says stop by any evening during their stay here. Anybody live nearby that could give us a report?

Let's schedule it! Any suggestions on day/night.

    Ladies,
Thank you for RSVPs and comments for this event. This is deffenetly will be an evening event, and probably the weekday evening( looks like it attracts alot of people and we may want to stay away from weekends ). I am out of town till the 11th of September. Please suggest date that is good for you. I would think 7pm will be good time.

I went last year also but I did not get any good pictures of the birds. It is however very very amazing and worth seeing if you have not.

Heather, it is. It's basically located near the Pearl. NW 25th & Pettygrove, I believe. Basically right next to Wallace Park

i went last year, but I didn't get to it till the end of Septmeber and the amount of Swifts was way less. The earlier in September the better.
