Acoustic Music Meetup @Mannion's

Join us for another acoustic jam at Mannion's! This is an inclusive jam, not an open mic. Members are encouraged to sing and play along the entire night.

We will be meeting on the ground floor in the side room. Look for the folks with the musical instruments.

Mannion's serves delicious food and has a nice selection of beers. Most of us take a dinner break around 7:30. After dinner, we play until they kick us out--usually around 11. Please bring cash to pay for your dinner and drinks.

There is an evolving setlist for this meetup. We usually get through all of the requests, most of our "semi-permanent" songs, plus about 20 more songs out of the over fourteen hundred or so songs in our files.

If you would like to add a song to the setlist, make sure it is posted to our site in the "Files" section or added to our shared Dropbox folder, then post your request in the "get the conversation started" section below.

Speaking of.great stuff; loads of love and congratulations to Joe and Carol; "May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your backs! May the rain fall gently on your fields, and may The Lord hold you in the palm of His hand"!

Bob, thank you for your kind words. As we celebrate our joining, you can be assured that we will think of all our absent friends from NJ AMP.

Brava Judy! WELL done. Everyone should be commended for their efforts to get us back on track. Initially, I did not want to respond directly to Carolyn's post, but she did bring up serious issues that need to be addressed now or else they will continue to fester and explode upon us. I cannot speak directly for Carolyn, but from the concerns that have been addressed to me and from what I have witnessed since my return from tax season, song requests are just the tip of the iceberg. Judy is right, the senior members came up with a system that has been working for us thus far. Newer members who do know know our history and have not gotten to know our ways are trying to re-invent the wheel. I want to be very clear on this--I am not referring to just one person. (continued)

      b) Your band is the appropriate group to whip members into musical shape. If you feel frustrated with not being able guide the cattle at Mannion's, perhaps it is time to form a band. NJAMP encourages and promotes band activities. (Thank you Tommy and JimBear!)

      5. Let it be and have fun! Perhaps the most important point. At Mannion's we are not aiming for perfection. Again, that is what your band is about. If your fellow Ampers are not keeping time, or not playing the way _you_ think they should be playing--you gotta let it go. There are more important things in life to obsess over. It's not about you. NJAMP is about the group, music, fun and friendship. We blend together so well because we hold this basic outlook, and put our individual needs aside. We just want to chill and have fun.

Phew! I hope I have addressed all the concerns that have been brought to my attention. I hope too, you are all discovering what us long-time members knew about NJAMP--that this is a very special group of friends and extended family. Let's keep it that way. Peace,

      ice

I LOVE my Thursday nights with NJAMP, and don't want anything to ruin it. We are like a family, and like all families there is going to be misunderstandings, and moments that don't go as smooth as we would like. I think the way to fix that is communication, so though I hesitate to comment, especially on a public forum...here goes.(continued)

As far as picking songs, in the past, we have all pretty much been respectful of everyone's choice, as long as they don't go over the limit of 3. As echoed here, I think that now will continue to be honored going forward. I personally respect that the long time members have a way of doing things, and I think they have done a great job. I would continue to let them handle it, and hope the rest of us can just PLAY MUSIC, HAVE FUN and ENJOY....I don't think anyone meant to offend anyone, and I don't think any of us wants a family feud, so now that the air is clear, dirty laundry aired...let's move forward! NJAMP Long May WE run!!

Sounds like sanity to me! I'm with Joe! Like I said before; we have too much great stuff to focus on! The rest is piffle!

Oh dear! It seems that we have gone astray in the last few days with some rather venomous comments. I would like to state my peace, and yes, I spelled it that way on purpose. I believe that it was made clear that songs will be honored regardless of who makes the request. Wendy has also done a credible job of apologizing, and I think we should be glad for her maturity and grace in accepting the criticism. I beg all of you to let bygones go, and move on with what our Meetup has been in the past. If you agree with me, please add your own comment in reply. If you disagree, please add that as well. I hope we see only positive and forgiving words. Thank you all for your time and attention to this plea for peace.

I'm putting a check mark in the 'Awesome' column for last night. Some nice new songs, some progress on some of the trickier ones, and some standout moments.

Some of the stuff we did was fairly challenging from a timing perspective, and I think (if I do say so myself) we did a pretty good job for 20+ people. And as usual, by the time the bill arrived, the energy was sky high and we were rocking the room.

I have to give a shout out to Bob Cole for growling his way through 'Unchain my heart'. Terrific. Nancy - you have my utmost respect for having the nerve to sing a solo, mic-ed (very well too I might add) in front of a room full of strangers. Well done!

Mark - excellent fiddle playing on 'I know you rider'. With a just a little more practice, we might all get that song yet.

Thank you everybody for another great evening!!

What Mike said. What Mark said. And you all just might want to check out that other joyful musical community that Mark and Susan and Mitch and FiL and Bob C and Ed L and Judy R and I and others are a part of: www.FolkProject.org

Good seeing everyone. Great energy, lovely hens. :)
If I can remind everyone, this is an _inclusive_ jam. This is part of what makes NJAMP sucessful--that we all feel included. It was terrible to witness Ted request Dead Flowers only to have others put the ixnay on that. Ted goes back with us a long time, and Dead Flowers was one of our regular songs! Please remember, the rest of the group puts up with your individual song requests. It is only fair to honor the song requests of others. Fil is excellent at accomodating others. We need to keep this spirit of NJAMP when he is gone. (... and we did eventually play Dead Flowers a few songs later after I asked Ted to lead us on it. Thank you Ted.)

      Or requests "Feelings"?

      2 · April 26, 2014

    • ice

One person should not have the right to _unilaterally_ shut down a song request. That's all. Many of us wanted to play Dead Flowers, and we eventually did.

I can't think of a night at Mannion's that didn't get a check mark in the "awesome" column. They just keep getting better and better.

Love all the challenging new stuff we're doing, the amazing new people jumping right in with both feet (and hands, and voices), the established "hits" that just keep reaching higher heights (some of them on video ... thanks, Judy S!).

Especially loved some of the crazy stuff we got up to with the small group at the end: "I Used to Love Her But I Had to Kill Her", "Up On a Roof", and ... yes we did ... "White Room". Your homework for next week. :-)

Wendy there has been much discussion about your behavior since you have joined our group. Based on these discussions I feel compelled to voice a group opinion. This group is a lighthearted, peaceful, fun, easy going meet up, and we come here to get away from the hectic lives that we have, to enjoy friendship and wonderful music. The general opinion is that you have come into this group as if you were an organizer from the start, or many feel that you behave like you own the group. Your behavior has caused disruption and brings negative energy into our group. No one likes to be told what to do.

      April 26, 2014

    • Carolyn B.

Instead of coming into the group with guns a blazing, maybe you should take some time to learn our ways of doing things. The members who blended into our group took time to do that. You have not do this, and this has caused many members to be put off. In the past when anyone caused trouble they were gently ask to stop or to go find another meet up group to fulfill their needs. Yes, we are here to have FUN, I for one will work very hard to keep the dynamic of the group. This group is very special to me and I love it.

"Oh,what a night!" "What a very special time for me!" Definitely a "rockin'" time, and there ain't nobody this toad would rather rock with than you guys and gals! Hey, please to not be put off by things said half in jest! We've got sooo many great things goin' on; keep the focus on what counts! Which is how amazing this whole act can get! And I vote that we create a "Shepherd Of The Cats" award for those who manage to take a bunch of voices in the wind and get them to turn into sweet, sweet music!! Thanks again!

One more thing, last night was great, and I hope that with all this nonsence that we do not lose some of our people.

I know. It saddened me to hear from one of our members last night that people will start leaving if they keep getting bossed around and barked at. This is not the NJAMP I joined.

Oh and by the way, I would like to know who has the authority to say that a request of a song cannot be done? Just asking.

My standing requests until we get 'em solid and/or "One Toke" makes the semi-perm list:

"One Toke Over the Line" - no capo until I hear someone other than me who can lead it loudly and accurately

"Should I Say or Should I Go"

"Heartache Tonight" and/or "Don't You Forget About Me"

    Reserve list:

Whichever of those last two gets dropped
    "Southern Cross"
    "With or Without You"

Anyone else who likes any of those, please make a formal request if you want them played. (Including the first three - then we can just move the next one up from my reserve list.)

Brian, Bob C, and Joe G all mentioned "Southern Cross" last week and it didn't get done. Consider this a reminder. :-)
