TBA, Byram, NJ
Join us as we celebrate a traditional Germanic Yule at our vé (sacred space) in Stanhope, NJ. For those wishing to drink alcohol, we ask that you BYOB, but we ask all adult (18+) guests to donate $10 to help offset the costs of food, soft drinks, and other expenses. Donations will be accepted at the door.
If you have not been at one of our other events in the past, please contact us before RSVPing. Newcomers will not be admitted to Yule as their first event.
Yule was one of the three great sacrificial feasts mentioned in Snorri Sturluson's Ynglinga Saga, where he said that Odin ordained a sacrifice be done "for a good crop". Many pre-Christian Yule and New Year's customs were later incorporated into Christmas celebrations, and we will be incorporating a variety of customs into our celebration.
The schedule of the day follows:
1:00-2:00: Arrival. Light snacks will be provided throughout the day.
2:45-3:00: Blót preparation. The background of the offering, as well as any relevant audience participation, will be explained.
3:00-3:30: Yule Blót. An offering will be made to Thor for good crops in the coming year. Tribe members and guests are encouraged to bring written wishes for the coming year, to be included with the offering. If you have an animal mask, attendees are encouraged to bring it to participate in the "guising". Please note than non-Asatruar will be asked to remain inside while the blót takes place.
6:00-7:00: Feast. A feast of ham with all the trimmings will be provided. Please note that we are not doing a pot luck this year, but instead are asking participants to donate $10 to help offset the costs.
8:00-9:00: Sumble. The great ritual drinking ceremony of our ancestors. Attendees are encouraged to prepare a suitable toast in honor of the gods, an ancestor, or something else! Modest gift-giving is also encouraged, but please do not bring gifts for everyone in the hall. Gifting should be both significant and sincere.
9:00-onward: Dessert and merriment! More drinking (around the fire outside if weather permits, around the fire inside if not), divination for the coming year, and general socializing. Crash space will be available for those who need it (but check first - it is not limitless), so those who wish to drink their fill can do so without having to worry about driving home.
Refunds are not offered for this Meetup.
