Have you heard of geocaching? You can read about it online, but the jist is you go hunting for a hidden box in the woods (or in urban setting, for that matter). The GPS coordinates are online, but that only gets you close. The box usually contains a logbook to sign, and may have 'take a knick nack, leave a knick knack' too. Geocaching ends up being a combination of hiking, technology, and treasure hunting. This one may have limited appeal if you don't already have a GPS receiver (unless you're ok with sharing), but I'm throwing it out there to see if there's any interest. Conceivably this could be combined with some other hike or event, as geocaches are EVERYWHERE.
