Starry Night at Sheep Hill Observatory is Back!!

  • May 2, 2014 · 8:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Hello Everyone,

We are still on for tonight however, there is a prediction of cloud cover between 25-75% between 8-10pm. It is completely up to you if you want to take a chance. Someone will be up there and we'll open the dome just in-case. If there's cloud cover, we'll wait till about 8:30-8:45 to see if it clears up. If your not sure, look up before you leave :)  If you show up and we don't see anything, we can still get together for a bite to eat at Mara's Cafe in Denville (details in event) or a diner.

Will keep you posted on a future date for a repeat of this event.

Melanie

Anyone interested in observing the stars, star clusters, nebula's, planets and more with a personal guided tour of our night sky through telescopes? April is a great month to view the night sky. Planets we may get to see: Jupiter, Mars and Saturn-(after 10pm).

The Plan:

**Please keep in mind that this is a weather sensitive event. In the event of rain or clouds covering the sky, the event could be canceled. You really can't predict the weather until the day of (please see rain dates below), as a result, it makes this event difficult to plan in advance. Please check the weather for the Boonton, NJ area the day of the event. If canceled, I will try to give you as much notice as possible without canceling too early and risk missing a clear night. I would suggest making back-up plans "just in-case".

Rain Date: Sat. May 3rd.

*This event will be "Outdoors" the temperature is always cooler on top of the hill.  Please dress appropriate for the weather!

*Keep in mind, there are NO RESTROOM facilities on the premises.

We may be spending 1-2 hours there but at your leisure.

You may need a flash light to help you see in the parking area but please be sure NOT to point it up in the direction of the dome or telescopes...Thank you!

About Sheep Hill Observatory:

*Sheep Hill Astronomical Association (SHAA) is a non-profit Association. There is no fee for this event however, your support for any donation (whatever you feel comfortable giving) is appreciated.

Please don't forget to sign their visitors book...Thank you :-)

For more info go to: http://sheephillastro.org

Directions:

Latitude 40.92° North

Longitude 74.41° West

For Directions and more info. please visit their web-site: http://sheephillastro...

**Note:** Once you reach the end of Ross Dr., you will hit an empty dirt parking lot. Continue straight & follow to the right up a small hill until you're in the second lot. (Please go slow). The dome will be on your left. If the lot is full, you can park in the first lot. Please keep the spaces tight to leave room for others. It's very dark up there and aren't any lights. You may need a flashlight.  Please, DO NOT point them up or in the direction of the telescopes or toward the dome...Thank you!

Following: We can stop at the local Dukin Donuts or the famous Mara's Cafe in Denville (15min. drive). Address: http://marascafe.com/ - 25 E. Main Street Denville, NJ 07834 Or, a local Diner.

*Please note that this event will also be posted on two other meetup groups!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Look forward to seeing you!

I apologize for being a no-show. I attended a class beforehand that went on much later than expected, and I didn't get out until 9:30. Usually, I let organizers know if I can't make an event. Sorry about that!

I believe this to be a outing from several different meetup groups. I don't see why not. Just click RSVP and +2. You should be fine. Enjoy!

    • Melanie

Absolutely, bring whoever you'd like :)

      April 25, 2014

  • Tom

Since it is multigroup, will we be meeting anywhere in particular?

    April 24, 2014

    • Melanie

Hi Tom, We're all meeting there at the time the event starts. People can come later if they choose. They'll probably be open till after 10pm. There will be a few telescopes to look through so we all won't be looking through the same one at the same time. Hope that answers your question. :)

    Hello Everyone,

Unfortunately, due to the weather prediction for Fri. nt., I've rescheduled this event for Sat. 4/26 (same time). Sat. night is currently predicting a 40-80% cloud cover between 8-10pm but this could change. Please check the event details and your e-mail for any updates. New rain dates are: Fri. 5/2 & Sat. 5/3
    Thank you, :)

Can you ask them about viewing the ISS? There's a short window when we can see it.

    April 21, 2014

    • Patrick

Mick, there will be a 5 minute flyover starting at 8:40 PM on Friday. This will be easily naked-eye visible, although not as bright as it can get. It will be moving too fast for the big scope, but for a closer look, it's best viewed through a pair of binoculars (still looks like a dot, though).

      Ah well, thanks anyway.

Hi Laura, yes, that would be ok since this is s combined event with other meetup groups. There will be all ages attending this event other than 20's-30's. Otherwise, we try to keep this age range with this group only. Thank you for asking. Look forward to meeting you :-)
