Fiestas de Albuquerque

Old Town Plaza

Celebrate Albuquerque's birthday and enjoy the history and traditions of our city with live entertainment, free children's activities, live artist demonstrations, local food, shopping, and fun for the whole family. Every April since 1988, Founder's Day has celebrated the City of Albuquerque by reflecting the historic eras: Native American, Spanish, Mexican, Territorial and Statehood. The celebration commemorates a unique and historic event: the birth of our city. Founder's Day honors Governor Cuervo y Valdés for his vision, and honors the first community. It also pays tribute to every generation that has contributed to the growth and prosperity of this enchanted city that was named the Villa de Alburquerque in 1706. The founding of Albuquerque is a success story worth celebrating.

Ojito Pines at sunset

Lowe's Home Improvement

This is one of New Mexico's newer wildernesses, located near the little town of San Ysidro NM and about 10 miles west of Highway 550 (The road from Bernalillo to Farmington). The plan is to get out there around 5:30 PM and take a leisurely hike about 2 miles to the Hoodoo Pines area where there's a lot of photographic opportunities. This night is also a full moon. Sunset and moon rise are around 8:00 PM so this gives everyone a Chance to take some pictures before finding that sweet spot(s) for the “Golden hour”, sunset, and moon rise photos. This is somewhat of an exploratory trip as I am scouting the area to hopefully set up another trip in the fall for Milky Way/Night photography. Because we may be off trail in some places, and we may be hiking back to the cars in the dark, and since trying to keep photographers together in that situation is a lot like trying to herd cats, I will be keeping the RSVP rather small. Also since there is a good chance that we may get separated, those photographers who are interested in going should have some hiking and basic land navigational skills and/or have a handheld GPS that they know how to use so that they can find their way back to the car if they do become separated from the group. Other than your camera gear, remember to bring; good hiking shoes/boots, a pack with a warm jacket, sun screen/hat, at least 1 qt water, some snacks, a whistle, a flashlight or two, and a hand held GPS (If you have one). Since cell phone coverage in the Ojito is spotty at best, do NOT count on your cell phone to call for help if you do become separated. Each person participates at their own risk. TRANSPORTATION: On the drive up, once we turn off of 550, the final 10 miles to the parking lot at Ojito is on an all weather dirt road. We we try to arrange carpools with vehicles with a little extra clearance. If you are ridesharing, please bring $ to help cover the cost of gas. CANCEL: The promise of rain or adverse weather and road conditions will cancel this event.
