With several hundred miles of available hiking trails within a days drive, New Orleans is in need of a dedicated Meetup for overnight backpacking. Trips will be held at least once a month, but members are encouraged to organize within the group as well. We'll camp on the banks of Black Creek in De Soto, hike past the waterfalls of the Sipsey Wilderness, and get lost trying to find the trail heads of the Lone Star Hiking Trail.
All participants will be expected to adhere to LNT principles https://lnt.org/learn/7-principles .The group doesn't supply anyone with gear, food, or accommodations of any kind. Please show up properly equipped. If you're unsure as to what you may need, start with the Ten Essentials ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Essentials ,or just ask an organizer.
Our trips are generally safe, but accidents can happen. Louisiana has 7 species of venomous snakes, feral hogs, black bears, swarms of killer bees, and I think I saw bigfoot once. Ankles can twist, muscle can be pulled, and people can become dehydrated. Bad weather can and will happen; torrential rain, golfball-sized hail, and snow mixed with sleet are common in our area. Heat exhaustion is a threat in the summer and hypothermia can be a threat in the winter. We're all adults, and as such are responsible for our own well being. Your safety is in your own hands, and not anyone else's.
Our group now has an unlimited membership, and I hope that people will remain active. As such, participation is required. Inactive members will be contacted after 4 trips have passed. If I don't get a response they will be removed. If none of the events I start are aligned with your schedule or of your interest, please feel free to host an event within the group.
New members must be approved by the Organizer
