Heartsick in China

Oh my lively, lovely, literate lovers of the sociable tipple—you do seem bent on exploration of matters murky and unpleasant. But your will be done: Our final book selection of the year is ‘Midnight in Peking: How the Murder of a Young Englishwoman Haunted the Last Days of Old China’ by Paul French, 2012

“The British envoy's blonde daughter, illicit sex parties, a blood-stained rickshaw and a 75-year mystery finally solved; The body of Pamela Werner, the daughter of a British consul in China, was found with several organs missing; Her father Edward Werner was initially one of three suspects; Investigation was suspended after Japanese invaded in 1937.” "Clue by clue, Paul French uncovers the truth of a bizarre murder case that shocked Peking in 1937. In doing so, he draws a chilling portrait of the city's decadent, violent and overly-privileged Euro-American expatriate community…Fascinating and irresistible." – John Berendt

Jefferson Parish Library has several copies by New Orleans does not seem to have any. It is available as an e-book. And I will ask Maple Street Bookstore to get some copies.

    Hello friends.
Unfortunately I am not going to be able to attend the December meeting. The meeting happens to fall on my roommate's birthday and I was unable to convince her that there was no better way to celebrate her big 2-6 than riveting book discussion with witty and intelligent people! I'll see you all in 2013.

OH! We will miss you at our pre-holiday gathering! I certainly hope your roommate knows she is missing out on a good time. But best of birthday wishes to her, anyway. See you in January.
