Make a pen with a wood barrel on the lathe. These pens are fine gifts and conversation pieces, not to mention pleasing instruments for writing. The well-established tradition of wood pen turning uses a refined process and technic with affordable tools and materials. With the small scale of the turned parts, you can quietly and agreeably learn or improve detail wood turning skills. Once you see the basic process, abundant creative options will be apparent. Beyond the huge selection of pen kits and blanks available, mandrel turning opens up opportunities for beads, handles, pulls, and other great home craft items.
Sign off: Read carefully!! This class can result in safety sign off if the safety lecture is added. Arrive at exactly 1:30 for this training. See more info below.
The course will provide tools, materials, and instruction to make two pens. It’s a straightforward multi-step process. You can choose to start in the middle to finish a pen in class, or start at the beginning to make components for later completion, or any blended approach that suits. Regardless, you are likely to see choices of pen kits and blanks that you want to pursue independently. This course will show you how.
If you aren’t already safety certified on the wood lathe and would like the sign off, come in 45 minutes before class and you can turn this into a safety sign off (must have GO also). If you’re a beginner or just want a refresher and extra practice time, you can also come up to 45 minutes early for discussion and hands-on practice potentially leading to certification.
Important: Safety certification on the wood lathe does NOT allow you to use the metal lathes. The tools and safety concerns for metal work are quite different.
